I like the management potential for sure. A friend just had his farm flown and the deer counted. His area was hit by EHD pretty bad this past year. This flight counted 175 deer on over 600 acres. Would have loved to have last years total to compare it to. As far as recovery i think the only way...
We can normally sell some maple for more than pallet price for the better logs. There seem to be a few buyer/mills that specialize in that stuff although many are
On the east side of the state. River City Hardwood, Hammes and Gingerich in Drakesville have bought maple from us.
The scary direction i see the drone scouting going are flying and locating high end deer then targeting these thru leasing and/or tresspass fee. With out a doubt there are people willing to pay trophy fees to be put on real big deer. I have heard a few podcasts with Spook Spann and he has been...
I left out one important step. Have the consulting forester determine your basis. Meaning the total timber value when you purchased it. This information will allow you to depreciate the timber value to offset the income from the timber sale.
The way I would start the process is like this
1. Walk your property with the State Forester. He can give you general info on what you have, some possible market conditions and most important what can be done long term to meet your goals. Also possible post harvest cost share for TSI.
2. Find...
This is one cull buck that gave us the slip a few time tried to hunt him with 2 different youth hunters. Had my brother sit with a friend who got him 1st day of late Mz
Best advice I can think of is get a good plan in place for spraying. Many failures I see are not getting notill acres cleaned up preplanting. No till planting also takes some patience for letting the ground get “right“. This means waiting another day once the guys with a turbo till ahead of the...
I picked up trees actually shrubs, from the Iowa State Forestry Nursery yesterday and planted them today. I have had really good luck with them over the last 20 years. Only had a few issues in that time. Picking the trees up your self ,versus having them sent helps alot on the quality control.
I had this same thing happen early mz this year. I actually got a picture of him still running 1/2 away. Changed my access thru permission from a neighbor and ended up getting him 5 days later. 5-6 year old deer
Had a young guy stop by a few years ago because he saw some turkeys 4th season. Asked if he could hunt them, i told him we hunt also but for today go for it. Was pretty cool to see the excitement.
When the legislative session starts I can help lobby against this anytime. Although I have had an Outfitting Business and still have a smaller ownership interest ,I agree with Skips view on the HuntR podcast. Iowa is a different place than it was 25 years ago. Keeping the NR tag levels where...
Any storys or action for anyone that hunted WY this year. Just got my 10th point need to start paying attention. I did help some buddy’s with AZ elk tags which went pretty good
I have personally seen 2 / one buck and one Doe neighbor found 2 across the street. they were either in or near ponds. this was Monroe county near Albia
Great post. Both my girls are gone to school in Ames. Some of my best memorys are taking them to Az for a week of scouting in a year I had an elk tag there and times in the BWCA
There is a 60 gallon model may be Fimco not sure alot of friends and clients have them and they are a lower profile and have the option of boomless they work ok. They work better with a seperate deep cycle battery than off the machines power source.I think that is in your price range new.
I...
I have an equip contract with 8-10 acres to clear like that. Mine is mostly cedars and locust the cost share is really low about 250-275 an acre for the clearing.
The Cedars are full canopy in spots and 12-16 inch dbh. Thought about renting a shear for my skidloader but may just get them with...
