SO Pround of my best friend.

Fantastic. Hope i can still be hiking in, climbing stands, and dragging out at 83. There's plenty of people 30 years younger than him that can't do it!

    Orange Army

Saturday was the first time I've sat my farm on opening weekend morning as previously I've hunted with a group elsewhere. I just sat in a stand. I was sort of going more to have my truck parked there to have a presence and to listen for shots etc. Between 700-900 i heard dozens of shots, mostly...

    Orange Army

I'll be out too. I got a couple bucks I would love to get a shot at. One I could have killed for sure during archery a couple weekends ago, but had no shot through some brush as he made a rub for 3 minutes at 20 yards. I would so much rather get them with the bow, but I wont hesitate with my 12...

    Hiking boot with recommended

Ive had a few pairs of Danner pronghorns. The first pair I had several years ago seemed really good and lasted a long time, very comfortable. The past couple pairs have not seemed as good. Still a decent boot in mind, but Ive never tried anything else really. I wear them beyond normal use until...

    Gratis/ landowner tag.

No idea on numbers, but I'd bet is abused a ton. I just came from one side of the families thanksgiving yesterday. They farm a couple thousand acres, corn & beans, very little cover. There are some deer, but hardly any. They say they are overran though. Every fall I get to hear them brag about...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Those are gun guys, not deer guys. I've learned there are hunters that are just about kill kill kill and are more about shooting their weapon than the deer. Then there are hunters that are more about the deer/wildlife and have respect for conservation and the game they pursue. It can be very...

    Brutal

10 years or so ago I rattled in a buck the end of november. He came in to the rattle out of range and went to leave. I let him go a little ways and then rattled again and he came in to 20 yards and I killed him. I was surprised when I recovered him to find that he had last an eye that rut....and...

    Brutal

I'm glad Im not a deer. Rut can be bruttle. This guy got his tail whipped. Busted off an entire antler, the pedicle area doesnt look good, I'd guess maybe a fractured pedicle base/skull plate. Lost an eye too. Looks all swollen around the eye area.

    Rut Action/Movement Reports

Took yesterday off and did an all day sit. Slow. One doe in the morning and then a couple does in the last hour of light. I did pass up this nice 8pt for the second time this year. I'm guessing he is 3. He passed by a 4pm cruising. He was checking one doe near me and then moved on passing by me...

Your Best part of the season so far??

Its not been a very good season thus far. A lot of sits without a lot of action or seeing much...did an all day sit yesterday and only saw 4 deer from the stand. My dad usually hunts with me. I've always enjoyed the drive to and from. Talking Hawkeyes, economy, plans, and deciding who is going...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

I agree that the best way to increase age class is to increase the population. The more deer on the landscape the more bucks there will be and then more of them will make it to the next season. Ive only ever shot 4 does that I can recall off of private/public ground. I just did the math, this is...

How many tags in IA for landowners.

Your scheels guy is wrong. Assuming you are asking about how many anysex tags. Actually could be up to 4 if you qualified and got lucky and drew any urban any sex tag, but 3 is the answer without urban.

Poll: How’s Hunting this year vs past seasons? Short & long term choices

Same as I have seen in my 15/16 years of deer hunting. Seems to be fewer deer every year. I remember being a kid in the early 2000's before I got into hunting and the deer #'s I would see in the winter were impressive. There were a lot when I first started hunting too, but I didnt know what I...

    Rut Action/Movement Reports

I did all day sits 11/5, 11/6, 11/7. Saw some chasing and a good 10 pt one day, but nothing older than 3.5 Overall very low #'s for that farm compared to what it usually is. Was pretty disappointing. The mornings were a ghost town. This was in timber. Didnt really even see a deer until around...

    Rut Action/Movement Reports

Saturday 11/1, central IA- sat from dark to 1230pm. Very slow. Didnt see a deer until about 1050. Ended up seeing 2 does and a small 8pt. Sunday 11/2, southern IA-all day sit. Very good sit! Probably say 15-20 deer, some may have been the same ones. Had good movement until about 1030, then...

    Buck Rub Contest #2

Just an awesome looking shredded tree I found a couple weeks ago scouting.

    What went on here?

Not sure. I've noticed too sometimes deer are active and up & moving when you wouldn't expect it and it spots that you wouldn't expect. Not sure you can find a link to it. Just deer doing deer things.

    Taxidermy wait time.

6 months to a year seems to be the norm from what I read usually. Earlier in the season you bring a deer in the sooner you'll get it back. Ive had 3 mounts done, they've ranged from about 4 months to 8 months. 2 years and not back yet is nuts. I would think they should stop taking on so many...
