Thanks for the info fellas! Ive always used soybeans and Im ready to try something different. I assume you just notill drill the brassicas into the standing crimsom?
I think its too early to give up on the stand for sure. Id burn to get rid of seeds from previous year and more than likely use herbides to get rid of some of the competition there after.
No cameras, no nothing in my opinion... Cameras will be intrusive as hunting the site! Youll get the same photos on your fields and funnel spots toward outside edges...
Took a quick look at it and the one thing I noticed was the stand site located up in the middle of the timber. Horrible idea in my opinion, especially on this small of a farm. Give the deer the heart of the farm and hunt them on the outside edges. Over the course of time the deer will feel...
I use mock scrapes and they work great for shot positioning and even better for camera setups, but my most productive stand enhancements without any question is improving access! If you cant get in and out without the deer knowing it honestly nothing else matters... On top of that the stand...
I take 200# of maximizer with me to the feed mill and they custom blend and put it into burlap feed bags just like they mix cow feed for other customers. I even liked this mix better when I could get bulk peanuts by the ton and substitute them for half the soybeans in the mix. I will warn you...
I use the 600# banks feeders. Been feeding this mix for years with good results. 500# roasted soybeans,200# Maximizer concentrate,1250 rolled corn and 50# soy oil.
I feed from the time the season goes out until a month before it comes back in since I live in a non bait state that allows feeding...
If access is good like you said and you pick up another wind to hunt then Id go for it. I agree on more options and that it supports more deer and lowers stress, but it also makes it a little complicated on the hunting.
May be too late for this but a large alfalfa field would have been a nice addition to hold deer in october. Another thing that came to mind is it a possibility the deer are leaving for larger timber about the time acorns hit the ground? Im betting that is exactly whats happening...
I was wondering if anyone had input on how wide a gate should be to accommodate log truck? Im getting ready to put up a fence and really don't want to go over kill on the gate, but don't want to have regrets later during a logging project. I was planning of hanging 2-12' gates for a 24'...
Im not sure what the situation in Iowa is like anymore as Ive not hunted out there since the hay day you speak of, but the Illinois farm I own still has stupid high deer numbers on it. I struggle to get a 15 acre soybean field to grow beans unless everything is perfect weather wise. The deer...
Im still watching with anticipation as well but one thin Ive definitely noticed is that they seem to be way more developed at this point than last year at this time. Hope that means they'll end up bigger in the end but don't know. They are at least 2 weeks ahead of last year development wise...
Ive had success of using brush to funnel and screen food plots. I agree with above though you don't want to over do it. Put some thought into how you do it and don't create a total barricade. I cleared out a 2 acre area and used brush on maybe 25% and in one solid line laying at a circular 45...
Great advice above. I would absolutely plant a couple of kieffer pear trees in the woods plot you describe above. Sounds like a killer spot and the fruit trees would just make it that much better.
Ive went all in on banks after starting with redneck. Figerglass doesn't hold up long term and they aren't air tight enough for me. I own 15 stump 4s and after the improved door system they are hard to beat.
Great info video and very well done! Thanks for sharing Sligh.
In regards to burning crp/ switch grass stands etc. Say you had 4 ten acre feilds. Would you burn one of these 10 acre fields to make up 25% or would you burn say 2-3 acres of each field in rotation?
Great post Sligh. I think its exactly what needs to be done on our place and I agree the sooner the better. Im going to try and get a couple of the worst culprits taken during youth if possible.
Ive been studying trail cam pics and especially video to see who are the worst bullies and there...
