I don't know much about MN but it would not surprise me one bit. People think IA is the best state in the country for big bucks and yes they do have a lot of them but what helps IA is the regulations they have in place including when their bow seasons and gun seasons fall and the type of weapons...
Interesting write up. I don't know if I completely buy that shooting all the best 2-3 yr olds will completely change the genetics of the herd. I do think that will have an effect but other things need to occur in order for the genetics to change. I think there was a study on this that shows...
I'm by no means an expert and have been trying to get better at aging but based on the one pic I can see the deer is at least 3.5. Maybe 4.5 but my guess would be 3.5 based on the dentin wear of the 4th molar.
I'd say most of the state would be better than where you are currently. Any of the zones previously mentioned are good and people have success on all of them on public land. As you stated there are no guarantees and you may also want to consider how much pressure you would encounter in the...
I agree its a big issue but not one of a top priority of Iowa residents but its the precedent it sends. I have never been out west hunting but would like to and I hope no more federal land is removed for all of the public. As Fred Bear once stated "If you're not working to protect hunting, then...
My wife and I just back from camping up in that area about a week ago. We stayed right next to Custer State Park. I never got to Deadwood but I've heard if you would like to get an Old West feel its a great place to go. I would also recommend Mt. Rushmore ($10 per vehicle entry) and Crazy Horse...
My family and I were hunting in South-Central IA this past weekend and found 3 dead bucks and 1 fawn. The one buck was found in a creek and was fairly decomposed so it was hard to determine if it had been shot but no velvet on its antlers (looks like it may have been there a couple months...
I've done it so if it's illegal I guess I was unaware. I don't see a problem with it as long as they don't have a weapon and don't plan on tagging the deer in the situation you described. Why wouldn't the dnr want you to recover a wounded deer?
Thanks I was just wondering if his early movement had anything to do with moon time. It looks like it was about 45 min off so you could probably argue either way
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I remember my dad telling me a story about that happening with uncle on a buck many years ago. They figured out he was pushing the bow more with his left arm instead of pulling with his right. Not saying that is what happened but lowering the draw weight will...
They all look young to me. Better let them grow some more. Jk. Those are great bucks. Good luck and please share some photos if you're lucky enough to harvest one.

As a current Air Force member I would also like to thank you for your service as many others on here have already done. I am currently stationed at Offutt but I'm due to PCS this summer so maybe I should consider WA as one of my options. What base are you stationed at?
I do not own...
I even found a treestand with sticks on the ground in the area I was Hunting this morning. I could have took them since they were on public but I have better moral character than that. Some people would have just taken the stand which is sad. Why can't people just leave other people's stuff...
Yes they were Iowa plates (Johnson county). I'm serving in the Air Force and was back in the state on leave. There are no decals on my truck as I try not to make myself a target and regardless of the plates on the vehicle it's still a worthless individual who would do something like this. I have...
