Agreed. I put neighbors at the very top on whether a farm can be great or not (unless its 1000s of acres). Just being honest, but the 2-4 year old bucks are very easy to kill. They go from one food plot to the next and hit bedding areas via pinches throughout the rut. If neighbors are shooting...
I was recently researching blinds again for a new farm. I ended up going with Redneck. There is a Redneck dealer in Creston that was great to work with and offered some pretty good pricing. They also help assemble/install them for a minimal fee. Buckaroo deer blinds is the dealers company name...
Skip, I think you would be very good at consulting with the all-around knowledge you have. I wouldn't hesitate to charge a competitive fee with Higgins, not many people have the knowledge you have with farms(habitat) and whitetails in general. I think $5-10,000 for a decent size farm would be a...
One step at a time. Let's stop all baiting during the hunting season (whether hunting near it or not) and then look into the corn fields that are being mowed down.
I agree. A lot of bucks get shot this way late season with guns. Since it is already legal, I doubt they will reverse it and make it illegal. I wish they would, but I don't see it happening. The no bait at all during the hunting season is a real possibility though.
I'm thinking about putting some supplemental feed out for the deer this year from now thru August. What feeders do you recommend for this? Feeders that keep the racoons out and secure well to the ground. Are the boss buck feeders designed to keep racoons out, or can they climb up the legs?
I have a great plains 606NT I purchased last year and love it, but I think you may need 50+ hp to be safe..I pulled it with a 60 hp and it did mostly fine .They are definitely heavy and pushed my tractor slightly if I was going down a steep grade between plots.
Great info as usual. All Iowa hunters need to get involved in this now before it's too late. Once bad bills pass, it's very tough to change them. The guy doing that podcast was pretty clueless and part of the hunting problem. He sounded like he wants to shoot multiple bucks a year and talked...
One thing I'll say about properties on landwatch is........I look at landwatch daily and I see a lot of marginal or maybe good hunting farms, but it is rare to see a great one. I think they sell before it gets to that point unless it's a high acreage/expensive farm.
I agree. A true top notch hunting farm will sell fast and bring top dollar. Especially when you stay under the 1 million dollar range. When you get over that. it really limits who can buy it. The last farm I sold wasn't even for sale, but I had an offer I could not say no too. Wealthy guys want...
Let's hope it doesn't go thru. Outfitting may be the single worst thing out there to destroy age structure. Look what happen to Pike county Illinois. It went from being maybe the best county in the USA for quality bucks to one of the worst in Illinois in a short time span due mainly to outfitters.
Skip, what day and time are you speaking? I think it's important to stress what makes Iowa so great. It's our regulations that are in place, and by making negative changes to these regulations will make Iowa not so great. Anything that makes hunting easier also works against Iowa by decreasing...
I agree 100%. The one thing that makes people from all over the USA want to hunt Iowa is our great age structure. We have larger bucks than almost every other state because our regulations mostly promote age structure. Everytime a new regulation is added making hunting easier ( party hunting...
