No way they would have survived. They are on Hill tops that get full sun and all the wind. First year planted they would have died I believe without the extra watering until they get good roots established.

Welcome to the Whitetail world. They have 14 hours of darkness to eat. It will take cold weather and snow to get mature bucks on their feet. I am in the same boat. Hunt less and wait for the right weather.
As I get older, sitting in a nice Hon office chair in a warm blind sure beats freezing my butt off up in a stand. Not much gets pushed around me and I only have 50 acres so if it cold I just sit on the food.
I will hunt in the rain unless it is a downpour every day after Halloween. You MUST be in a tree somewhere during those days. If it is pouring I jump in one of my blinds and once it subsides get back in.
I wanted to get away from tilling up ground which brings up all the weeds, kills any moisture when doing it late july and august when it is super dry. I get tired of using a rototiller in July and getting covered in Dust from head to toe.
