I have spoken with several of these folks in the past. They are always appreciative when their constituents contact them about the issues they are passionate about. If you really want to see change in natural resource policies and funding in this state, this is where you start. Contact these...
No problem Sligh. If the trees are sold soon after the property is purchased, you should be able to reduce your tax liability quite a bit. I believe the timber is considered as "capital" when you purchase the land. So any income gained from the sale of that "capital" would be subject to...
One thing I failed to mention before, and if you have recently acquired this property it is very relevant in your case, is you should get an appraisal done by a forester to establish your basis. When having a timber sale you will be subject to capital gains taxes, but only on your net capital...
Yes you can. I checked into this for the second shotgun season as the last day of waterfowl season was the thursday of second shotgun. The waterfowl refuges were then open for the last 3 days of that deer season. You can hunt anything in season outside of the no trespassing dates.
Thanks and I definitely agree. It is easy to get caught up in the back and forth of some of the more controversial threads. Its nice to get back to helping each other out every once in a while. I have gleaned a lot of good stuff on here and the least I can do is give back a little of my...
Ahh, a thread involving my line of work. Love it........
Anyway, it appears as if you are at least somewhat educated in this topic as you are talking about many of the things you should be thinking about when having a timber sale, such as a contract, multiple bids, marking the trees that are...
How do you explain the overall harvest having steadily declined since the mid 2000's? For some reason I seem to think that if there were more and more doe tags available and the population was high, then the harvest totals should have been increasing in correlation with the number of tags...
I wondered this too while I was looking at the numbers. It seems that the harvest totals steadily rose in correlation with the rise in population. So what in the mid 2000's made the population start trending downward? In looking at the numbers I am pretty confident that hunting pressure alone...

Take some time to scan through these reports. They are large documents with lots and lots of info, but there is some very interesting info. I started with the 2001 report and read the whitetail section. It gives a really...
I just love this part of the release........... There is your answer to all the DNR haters that constantly complain about them not reducing the seasons or tag numbers.
I totally agree. There is a lot of landowners that only allow bow hunting on their property. These properties become unhuntable during the gun seasons. Also, these properties could be a gold mine for bow hunters with all of the gun hunters pushing the deer around.
I appreciate the fact that people on here are recognizing that the DNR is not to blame, when in reality they have tried to eliminate some of the doe seasons, and also reduce the number of tags. All of those things have been presented up the chain of command, and it looks as if most of you...
I think the bow season should not be closed during the gun season. They don't close it in MN during the gun season, they just make you wear blaze orange. The chunk of property I hunt can only be bow hunted, no gun hunting. I am sure a lot of people have that same situation.
Hackberry is not particularly a great deer or turkey tree. It does produce a berry, so the song birds do benefit from it. I cut a small one down in my shooting lane this fall and must have had 10 different deer stop and browse on that tree, so it must be somewhat of a preferred browse species...
Give a call to you district forester and schedule an appointment to get them out and take a look. They will be able to write you a management plan that will get you on the right track. Just a quick thought would be prescribed fire. Fire is typically very effective at killing understory...
