You know it is one thing to let a CRP contract expire, plow under the grass, and go back to farming it. I get that. But when it comes to large scale forested land clearing, or as you said, tiling and draining slough areas to farm it is just asinine in my opinion.

    Running deer vs. slug velocity

Its quotes like this that give peta ammunition for attacking our sport. An ethical shot would be defined as a shot taken in confidence that it is highly likely it will result in a quick and timely death. No one here will argue that a trotting or medium pace running deer at a reasonable...

    Sad

It seems awfully short sighted to me to erase decades and decades of history, and such awesome wildlife habitat, to chase a spike in commodity prices. This is all to common across NE Iowa, especially this fall. Post pics and the county if you are seeing this in your neck of the woods. Here...

    Out of State Gun Tag

It also depends upon the zone. I saw as of last week an out of stater could have still purchased an anysex tag in zone 2 over the counter.

    Shot gunners???

I sure expected some pics by now. The conditions couldn't be better today up here in north central iowa. Couple inches of snow on the ground and temps around 30 or so. I am going second season but am constantly checking here for harvest pics and am not seeing any!

    Emergency Wetlands Reserve Program??

It really varies what you can do from easement to easement. Often times you are allowed to do things such as logging or timber stand improvement as long as it is in accordance with an approved plan, such as a forest stewardship plan written by the DNR. Other times whoever put the land into the...

Come on now, I have never heard of anyone being imprisoned for poaching deer, although some deserve it...............

Not to be rude but you are entirely off base here. Did you read the article and look at the pictures? None of the trees in the pics could be sold as a christmas tree and no amount of shearing could fix the browse damage (conifers, unlike hardwoods, will not resprout eaten off branches). Having...

http://wcfcourier.com/news/local/the-deer-that-stole-christmas/article_8fc1ec28-afe9-5447-8a01-189d1ff1a034.html With all the snow we had up this way last winter this is not surprising. The deer were grouped up into large herds, and when the only thing to eat is what is poking above the snow...

Don't like the term "Orange Army"

Seems to be a common theme with you. His statement seemed pretty clear. Anyway, the term orange army is often times used in a negative way on this website. Many bowhunters here comment how they give up bow hunting after the deer have been chased around by the orange army. Not all members of...

    Selective Cutting Timber

Here is the contact info for the district foresters. Absolutely give them a call and get the one that covers your area to come out and take a look. They will write a woodland stewardship plan that will summarize what you have for timber on your property, and then give you suggestions to help...

    Tree Planting

Check with your district forester. They will take a look at your site for you and develop a detailed plan for you to follow. All free of charge. I have not seen any of those species direct seeded, but I am in NE Iowa and the soils are quite different than southern Iowa.

Cardinal marsh WMA buck - winneshiek co.

Hey man thanks for the kind words. I feel for you. I read on here far too often about guys who have shot the buck of their life only to never find it. This one is no monster, but who knows who let the arrow fly, it may have been to them. Again, good luck to you in your search.

Cardinal marsh WMA buck - winneshiek co.

Sorry guys I have been working in the woods all day. Sorry to say this is definitely not the buck I found. The buck I found doesn't have any of the special things that were described. Its a pretty plain jane 8 pointer, but would probaby score 120 - 130. Very nice looking rack. Not sure if I...

Cardinal marsh WMA buck - winneshiek co.

Anybody on here bow hunt the cardinal marsh WMA in winneshiek county? I came across a nice 8 pointer dead in the woods that had been gutshot. It looks like it is no older than a few days. I will post pics later today as I am still in the woods. I would love to at least reconnect you with the...

Rage 3 blade deer recovery question?

Here is a pic of my first deer with a 3 blade rage. You can see I hit him a little far forward, right in the shoulder. This was from 38 yards and penetrated well into the cavity, catching the heart. He only made it 50 yards from impact, but bled out completely internally. Thankfully I could...

    Slug guns

For not a lot more I went with the Remington 11-87. We also do some sitting and a few drives, and I guess I have gotten pretty lazy and used to the semi auto. It is also one of the few semi auto shotguns that they make a cantilevered rifled slug barrel for.
