    Apple/Pear Trees

I'm getting my fruit tree and oak tree projects planned for this year. I've always used the tubes for the oaks but would the mesh be acceptable for them as well? Just looking for areas to cut cost as a foot of the mesh is cheap compared to a tree tube.

    Winke-Brandstad Interview

I think the main problem with his area is like he stated in his blog, his area has gone to war with the does and 3.5 year superior genetic bucks the last decade thanks to the hype it received in the mid 2000's. I can't point any blame, we went to war with the does in one of the best areas in...

    State Revenue possiblities

I just saw on the news this morning that the state is going to have a 965 million dollar surplus or something like that. Couldn't some of that extra dough go to the DNR?

    Winke-Brandstad Interview

There are plenty of public lands in this state with massive food plots. Have him sit over one of those and see what comes out during shooting hours. Nothing...guaranteed. I've been dumb enough to try it before several times. Only time I've ever seen deer on a public land food plot was in...

    Deer Harvest Update

Problem is, we stop buying tags, they will increase the NR tag count. I called that a few years ago. We're handcuffed and they'll get their revenue one way or another. I'll still be buying a butt load of doe tags like I usually do if they are available, just won't use them unless I feel...

    2014 Rut Predictions poll

Its tough to say but if I was on a tight schedule I'd try to be in a tree the 8th-12th. If you have a local big boy you want to get a crack at I'd hunt go after him in late Oct./early Nov.

    Branstad

Yeah I have a ton of doe tags leftover, probably like 9 or 10. I only buy that many because I hunt 6 different counties over 2 seasons (bow & muzz). Like the option of taking a doe if the opportunity presents itself but as I've said before, using my judgment this year I decided not to take...

Looking for a good Trail cam!

Moultrie m-990i...just got 5 of them, and you can find them for about $150-$170. Trail cam pro has great reviews. I'd listen to those reviews vs. anything from the big box stores.

    Concerning lone wolf stands

    This is what I thought.

    Hardest hit EHD area's

Very true. Look at the whitetail mecca we had before their hands were tied.

    Concerning lone wolf stands

So you are saying that the ez hang hook has to be removed? Didnt think that was possible.

    A must read

I hope Bills predictions for the future are correct. Ill always be in a treestand but I will admit that the lack of mature buck sightings and deer numbers in general make it much tougher. One 80 acre piece that I have to hunt in used to be in a prime big buck area...and prime deer population...

    Hardest hit EHD area's

Its all over the state. I hunt far east central, some farms around cr and also down in far se iowa. A few more summers like 2012 and 2013 and our herd will be toast....everywhere.

I must be the only one...

It just depends with me. Old bucks that I've gotten are a little to strong for my taste and those usually go to the lock and get made into sausage and jerky. A nice fat doe we mix the burger with 85% lean hamburger from the store 50/50 and that is good. Loins I don't tamper with except...

    Post season depression

I'm going to blast some shed bucks with my .270!!!! J/K...Coyotes are going down starting this weekend through February, then shed hunting/spring scouting in March up to turkey season. After turkey season is when I really get antsy for deer season to get here. I'll be blasting coyotes all...

Email from Loebsack / Tax credit for game donation

A co-worker the other day who doesn't hunt asked me how my season has gone. I told him I haven't gotten anything this year and he acted shocked and said 'why'? I said that I only try and shoot older bucks and I'm not shooting does this year due to the EHD outbreak and low deer sightings. He...

If you only had 1 afternoon left ?

I'm going Thursday and Friday. I also agree with what Daver said regarding the warm weather. I love early January hunting...seems like most of the guys have given up, the deer are calmed down again after the shotgun onslaught and move during daylight...just need to find a good buck that hasn't...

    Open letter to the Governor

My answer...the deer were here first. Be a defensive driver and take it down a notch while driving at night. I'd imagine most of the traffic deaths are from people who swerve to miss the deer and end up in a ditch with their vehicle flipping, not wearing seatbelt, etc. I do what I was told in...

Picked corn field or bean field??

Deer in my areas are feeding in the cornfields at night but pounding the crap out of browse and red oak acorns right now during the day. Ridge tops are just torn up from the pawing up the snow. Unless you have standing beans I'd think corn is king.
