This sounds like a great idea! My farm is in SE Iowa and fairly new to me. I would love to get some input from all you experts on projects/improvements to do if you ever wanted to do SE Iowa.
I had a skidsteer with forestry mulcher clean up a hillside that had 2-5” trees growing about 2’ apart. The guy charged $140/hr and did about 1.5ac per 8 hour day. My trees were extremely dense but not real big. He ground them up and then stuck the mulcher down into the soil and back drug it...
I am interested in responses to this as well. I like the steps that Sure Shot laid out and curious if others agree with those steps. I am halfway through my first year of trying this as well. I already frost seeded clover into my 1/2 that is brassicas, sounds like I need to do some oats as well.
I noticed the comment in the OP about deer not liking enlist beans as well. I have read that before but questioned the validity. I have several acres of enlist beans that look great but didn’t get hammered. Lots of beans still in pods. Makes me believe there is truth to not liking enlist...
I am pretty sure this has been asked several times but didn't see it at a quick search. What is the "best" tree tube along with height for planting chestnut seed? Also, is there a place that has best pricing on them? I only need about 30 right now.

I tried one of those cone shaped three point spreaders once with lime and i had to shovel it back out by hand! Would not waste time with that. I have been looking for a narrow drop seeder to apply lime to remote plots.
I have met with the dnr wildlife biologist at the pasture who is a big deer hunter so thinks our way. I have met with fsa in their office. I have not met with nrcs yet in that county, but did talk with the nrcs rep that i have gotten to know in my county. I plan to get the wildlife biologist...
I read through the grassland program today. Continued grazing is a requirement for the program which i do not want to do. Looks like that program is off the table.
That is my fear, get a bunch of junk growing and then that junk goes to seed and have a real mess. I love this idea if it would work. Anxious to hear others input on this.
I really like this idea if there is a good native seed bank! Would be great to do this in select areas for diversity pockets. My fear is the seed bank may just be crap i dont want (thistles, etc). Have others had good success doing this?
We have done some initial checking with FSA office about grassland and were told that it isn’t really used in Iowa. Told it was used in the prairie states like kansas and nebraska. Have you seen or heard of it in Iowa?
