    NWSG seed

Don't count on nwsg popping up in that scenario and I think you'll be disappointed in your brome kill with only spring set-back methods. Great for switch because you can use atrazine. Not so great for diverse mixes. A bunch of brome will pop right back up. Mow/spray in the fall, burn then spray...

    Military... considering retiring in IA

I think one appealing thing about Iowa is if a guy (and his gal) aren't tied down to a job, family, etc., they can really leverage funds and find very nice, affordable housing in some of the lesser populated areas with a low cost of living, near a lot of public land. And in my opinion and...

    Do Deer Even Use Switchgrass?

If you're looking to maximize deer use, mow paths from pocket of cover to pocket of cover, in your nwsg's. Make them as skinny as possible. This is not such a good practice if upland birds are on your management radar, as it creates interior predation entirely more possible, but the deer sure...

    DNR cutting standing trees ?

TSI for sure. Probably ironwoods, elms, etc. Girdling those trees will kill them and effectively open up the canopy to allow sunlight to jump start quality regeneration. Expect to see them using fire in these areas!

    IWILL January 26th

Great post, Mike. When I worked for PF I kept up with all IWill efforts. Admittedly, I've lost touch recently. I'm happy to be a voice, let us know how to help.

    Hinge cut iron wood?

Kill them all in my opinion. Cut and treat. You will get some instant cover this way, though not so many succulent re sprouts. However, successive regeneration of good trees if you pair the thinning with hinging/girdling/dropping bigger trees to open up the canopy can be outstanding in just a...
