100 VS 125 Grain Broadheads???? Minor difference or fairly important?

I read a study somewhere that said arrow weight and diameter have more to do with penetration than broadhead weight. Skinnier, heavy arrows get the nod for ke and overall penetration.

    What is herd carrying capacity

If managing for trophy bucks, a herd well below carrying capacity is what you need. Like 150 stated, if your timber has browse lines, time to thin them out. Aside from that, usable habitat is what determines carrying capacity. If your farm is stacked with quality bedding, browse, nutrient rich...

    Minimum amount

Lots of factors to consider, here. The right 20 can be dynamite, the wrong 640 can leave you scratching your head! I'd settle for a 40 or old-fashioned 80 to start if I were you. Inquire about the neighborhood, make sure you have multiple points of entry for hunting different setups, etc. Find...

    Fire Conference

Never been Fred but would love to attend. Fire effect knowledge is harder to come by than prescribed fire conduct. Great that there is so much emphasis on oak dominated systems. Huge part of natural resources management and could be huge for deer managers to realize the importance and benefit of...

Southern Iowa Deer hunters take action

Is seeing that amount of deer a common occurrence year round or just late season when deer are yarded up around the best combo of food/bedding within the area? Surely not questioning your intent but I feel we need to walk a tightrope with observations and arguments like this because I've seen...

Cross Bows in Iowa....? I hope not

I see crossbows as a niche, just like muzzleloader and traditional archery. The MASSES use compounds or shotguns. Compounds for the capable should not be used during archery season. Those not lucky enough to be physically capable of using compound or traditional tackle should absolutely be...

    Trespasser's are back

For one, not all outfitters are created equal. Unfortunately, I think some out there take advantage of Iowa's lame tresspassing fines. Also, if an outfitter is sending clients in to RC's land, that would explain why numerous hunters would not be afraid of a camera. The outfitter may well be...

    Would you rather..

I don't think it's a matter of neighbors being irresponsible. I think it's that there is a lot of competition for the resource. I've spoke with many of the hunters in my neighborhood and they all seem to be great people, even if they shoot 3 yr olds!

    Weekend hunt

I think with warmer forecasted temps this weekend, you will need to move closer to bedding areas rather than food source edges. I have heard of but not seen true 'winter' patterns yet where they're moving and hitting food early. I'd agree with above, pinch/funnel in the a.m. and try and cut them...

    Would you rather..

Couldn't agree more. Not that it CAN'T grow big bucks, they just don't make it to maturity. One will every so often and 15 hunters know about it because all the neighborhood lots are 5 - 50 acre pieces and all have hunters.

    cover strips

Careful that those wandering eyes don't make it behind your screen, out of your eyesight if you're just passing by on patrol. If it's just gawkers from the road you're trying to work around, a screen is a great idea. Poachers won't care about your screen.

    2014 IW Trapping Thread

The memories are worth much more than the fur, Wayne. My kiddos and I have had a blast in our first year, as well. A friends dad averaged $5 for whole carcass coon when he sold last week. These were from further north so I'd imagine the fur was more prime. Sounds about right what you got...

    2014 IW Trapping Thread

Took some advice from you guys on trapping water and nabbed this guy in the cattails. We were pretty pumped!! I wanted to start slow so I've left my snares in the garage thus far. However, with the cold weather I think I'll get them out and after some dogs!! Several fox on trail cam - though...

    Vacations over :(

Sounds like you're putting yourself in the right areas and that's half the battle. Something to hang your hat on, there. Sounds like a heck of a week. Head up, pal. Season is still young.
