    Watering hole

I used a skidsteer to make one at my last farm. It was probably about 20’ long, 6 or 7’ wide, and about 3.5’ deep. The deer used it pretty well, but i never witnessed (in person or trail cam) any bucks getting completely in it to cool off during the rut like i had been told.

    BearCreek Habitat Plan

Great writeup, thanks for sharing. I have never tried the doubletree strip rotation but sounds like i need to read more about it and consider it.

    BearCreek Habitat Plan

Sounds like a great property with a lot of fun ahead of you. I think i enjoy working on and improving my farm more than hunting it. Keep us posted!

    DWGH Home Farm Projects Thread

Daver and DWGH, thank you both for your reply. I need to take my tractor in to have the loader plumbed for the third valve. Seems like I rarely have my bucket on and always the forks for moving logs, etc that i am moving. A grapple would be a perfect addition. I already bought a tree puller...

    DWGH Home Farm Projects Thread

DWGH, what grapple did you buy? I am looking for one and not sure what to get. My tractor is similar to yours, I have a 65hp LS tractor, yours is a New Holland which I believe are made by LS in this series. I don't want to buy something so light that I tear it up, but also no sense in buying...

    Clover

I have a few clover plots that I am planning to seed this spring (I know fall is best time). As discussed above, I've used rye as a nurse crop for fall seedings, should I do the same for spring clover seeding? Or is there a better nurse crop for spring? Or should I not use a nurse crop this...

    Timber Stand Improvment

That is some great work, you have been busy! Are you going to leave all the brush in those clearcuts? Looks so tangled that there would not be any space to bed. Reason I ask is because i have some small ridges where i want to do the same thing.

    Timber Stand Improvment

Thanks for the reply. I do plan to burn but assume it will take many years of burning/drying/rotting before the large trees will be gone. That is why i thought it might be important which direction to fell them

    Timber Stand Improvment

One other question. I have a very thick patch of cedars, locust, and hedge that I want to drop trees and burn similar to Iowabowhunter video. This area is ditches, ravines, and fairly small ridges. Because of this I am not sure it will be great deer bedding, but I am hoping to make it the...

    Timber Stand Improvment

I have been going to war on thorny locust trees on my farm and treating stumps with tordon. Last weekend was the first time that a liquid oozed up out of the stump when I cut. I assume this means that flow is up now that it is warming and it is time to stop cutting locust trees because the...

    .350 Legend

I have owned and killed deer with both 350 and 450. I dont notice any difference in killing power between the two. I do notice a difference in bullets. The hornady sst’s seem to kill but very little blood trail. I have switched to pointed soft points and had better experience with blood trail.

    CP25 vs CP4D CRP Programs

Thanks all for the responses. I met with the NRCS rep on Friday. I pushed him about the tree removal and he said it would need to be removed unfortunately if I wanted the CP25 program. He said a few years ago they would have let it slip, but they are being much more strict now. He also said...

    CP25 vs CP4D CRP Programs

I am trying to get/understand if there is any difference in payment. Easier said than done it appears, seems like they want me to decide which program i want and they run the calculations to come up with rental rate. Reading between the lines I think the payment may be about the same.

    CP25 vs CP4D CRP Programs

Hello All. I am in early stages of enrolling a few fields of my farm into CRP program. One field along a creek bottom is about 13 acres and will likely be in CP25 program. An adjacent field is approximately 10 acres and has more of a hillside slope to it. This field has about 3 large trees...
