    Hickory woodlot

Although I do not remember the name of the source...Bill Winke has sourced acorns for plantings at this farm in NE Iowa, I think a couple of times now, and captured his activities via video on his YouTube channel. I think his most recent effort was last spring. But you could search for the...

    Hickory woodlot

We too have an oak/hickory timber with a variety of other species mixed in there too. I wanted to tip the scales over to more oaks and fewer hickories so I have TSI'ed quite a few hickories out over the years. BUT last year I had small scale timber harvest where we marked the trees we wanted...

    Grain drills

Is that a Genesis G5? I find where one of those weights 1825 pounds. I would be pretty confident that my 40hp would handle that as the rear PTO rating that I find is 2755 pounds. So even with the drill loaded with seed, I would think that I would have enough beef there to operate it well.

    Grain drills

I think you are correct, do you see that as a problem though? Or would I be better off with a heavier drill, but only a 3' wide variety? Annually, I would be likely to drill 3-4 acre of beans, 3-4 acres of brassicas, a couple acres, max, of milo and 3-4 acres of rye/oats/clover mix. So only...

    Grain drills

I am strongly considering getting a different NT drill this year and I am curious what input people here would have. I currently have a pull behind drill that has been mostly adequate, but I am thinking that I want a 3PT model. My tractors are in the 40HP range and therefore I think I would be...

    ATL

Yes, we are very pleased to have "something around". Only one of those three was around in any form up until mid-November. And the one that we did recognize was not around very much, FWIW. We had very few pics of him, but we did have some. So EHD dropped our numbers big time...but there were...

    HF 2104 and SSB 3129

In the past, it has definitely been the Farm Bureau. I would think it is a safe bet that they are behind it again. Their reasoning is that any publicly owned land is not then available for a farmer to purchase and operate as a farm.

    Frost seeding

In my mind, it is ideal to broadcast over about an inch of melting snow. It makes it real easy to see where you have been, via both your boot tracks and the sown seed. But bare ground is fine too, aim for the days where it is "greasy" by day, but freezing a little crust at night. Perfecto.

    Wisconsin Bans doe hunting

I personally do not know enough to agree or disagree with you, but your idea, while dramatic, may well be what is necessary up there in the Great White North. :) FWIW, I often listen/watch a weekly show on YouTube called "Michigan Outdoors". The fresh version from yesterday featured one of the...

    Honey Locust Tips

To be clear, when I think of "sucker" I think of the type of new growth on above ground limbs that one would find after pruning say an apple tree. What I have seen with locusts that are simply sawn down is that there will LOTS of new shoots coming out of the ground adjacent to the sawn tree...

Speaking at classic & ISC dinner- suggestions on Keeping iowa great?

I agree with your thoughts, in particular, the ones I bolded above. The only thing I would have differing feelings on is the use of cell cams. I deliberately DO NOT use them to monitor game/deer, but DO use them for security purposes. Short, short story...I would really hate to give that up...

    Feed deer

We plowed 2' of snow off of some green plots, see background, and delivered 2 800 lb bales of alfalfa and refilled some corn feeders, etc. Deer, turkey, pheasants were in it within 20 minutes of us clearing out. They hungy!!

    Pheasant rebound…

In my experience, the birds can withstand even brutal temps and conditions like we have had for the past 8 days...provided there is some relief in the form of being able to get to food, etc, and it doesn't go on and on. BUT...an ice covering on this much snow...that is NOT GOOD, not good at...
