    Planting sunflowers

For sure, goldfinches LOVE them. One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen was flushing hundreds of these beautiful birds out of a sunflower patch I had. It looked like someone painted the sky yellow and black as they skedaddled as I approached it.

    Interior woods plot

I am not sure it is very significant either way, but I would probably let them be and let the deer nibble on the shoots.

    Backpack sprayer recommendations?

Ahah...well you are smarter than I was. :) That would work too, just don't let them sit just water where they can freeze up.

    Backpack sprayer recommendations?

After using a couple of different brands over the years, I now have a "built to take it" Stihl, which I would recommend. Here's the warning though...don't store this type of device where it is susceptible to freezing, like in an unheated machine shed, outdoor storage container, unheated garage...

    Interior woods plot

Your situation sounds fairly similar to one of mine. Nowadays, I have access and equipment to the similar area, but when I started it I didn't. We call the area Highpoint, because it is the highest point on our farm. I manually cut down almost all of the trees in about a .6 acre high point...

Great podcast to listen to! Steve Hansen on the Land Podcast

For our area, where I have been hunting almost exclusively now for 20+ years, I would consider the biggest factors today as: 1. Trigger control...facilitated by tremendous "intelligence" in terms of what deer exist via regular trail cams and especially cell cams. Guys freaking know what is...

Looking good, great fish, fantastic adventure. Congrats!

    2 acre bean food plot

He ain't lying. ^^ :) Just FWIW, an unprotected 2 acre bean plot would have been smoked by the deer before the season even started at our place...up until last summer, that is, when we had a significant die off due to EHD. For the first time in forever, we actually had food leftover at the END...

    Bird population in your area

NE Davis County...things are improved from what they have been for years now. Why?? I wish I knew for sure, but I can say that there are several neighbors in my area that are MUCH more active on predator management than has been the case in the past. I do also think a dry summer (drought) can...

FOREST RESERVE DISCUSSION & DEBATE!! (Renamed)

I realize that this notion is a David v. Goliath scenario...but we need to get in the heads of the FB. You want to jack us up with your self serving legislation every year? Fine, let's go, let's get it on. Let's take a close look at what farmers already get. For too long they have held sway...

FOREST RESERVE DISCUSSION & DEBATE!! (Renamed)

To that point ^^ specifically...how many know that farmers, and lets face it, the real driver here is the Farm Bureau, are able to purchase many, many items without sales tax being applied to the transaction. I dunno about you...but nearly everything I buy I pay sales tax on it. Why are we...

    Planting sunflowers

I can believe that sunflower stalks could puncture tractor tires. I have at least two hols in one of my "new" tractor tires from corn stalks. I now mow my corn down pretty short...those "tall" stalks will get you.

    Late shed

I found a nice shed today from the seat of my tractor. :) Believe it or not, a gust of wind laid the grass down about 30 yards down hill from where I was driving and I thought I saw some white, bone like structure sticking up that wasn’t moved by the wind. So I hopped off the tractor and...

    Fire damaged trees

My very unofficial opinion, after onetime seeing a neighbor singe his similar looking trees with a burn of his...I agree with IBH. Maybe one survivor there, but otherwise toast. FWIW, none other Doubletree himself saw that site while visiting with me at my place back in the day...and I will...

    Video review- Titan Blinds

I have four "hard" enclosed blinds, but only one lets in flies. Go figure. I have spied a place where I think they may be getting in that I can caulk, but haven't done so yet. It is a kinked door seal that leaves just enough daylight that a fly could get in there. We'll see if caulking that...

    Such a great harvest pic

Ha, that pic reminds me of a time once, way back...I was out turkey hunting and fell asleep. It was a rainy day and not much was happening. I am not sure how long I had been snoozing but when I woke up I saw something right in front of me about 15-20 yards away. It looked just like your...

    Morels?

I have seen reports on FB that some are being found in SE Iowa. That is definitely early in my experience...but unless someone is pulling a fake, it seems to be beginning.

    Thermal drone herd analysis…..

Totally agree. ^^ I have no doubt that, if legal, some would not hesitate to "fly" their property prior to a hunt so as to see where EXACTLY Mr. Big is hanging and then go "hunt" accordingly. These drones are flying high enough and/or quiet enough that they do not spook the deer AND the cams...
