Congrats!! Keeping your traps working in this weather is not easy for many. That catch circle will likely produce again...LOTS of scent laid down there. Also, I would recommend shooting yotes once through the lungs, less pelt damage, etc, AND you can still preserve the skull.

    Season over December 31

If not for EHD drastically changing our population this year, we too would have been a probable on doe harvest in our neighborhood. I get that much of the rest of the state really should be subject to "additional" harvest...but in some areas, it is needed. Again, it is a moot point for us now...

    Welcome to my home, birds.

You know it's cold when...Wapsi lets the wild critters fly around in his living room. :)

    Land Prices

I am not sure exactly which properties you are referring to, but FWIW, I have personally walked a couple of the properties in SE Iowa in the last few months and there are reasons why they aren't moving that go well beyond the asking price. That a few properties are "sitting" does not prove, or...

    Blood thirsty savages everywhere!

It looks like Wile E. was going to use the ol' "run through the water" trick to throw them off the scent trail...only the water is hard. Drat! Now what? Those yelps are getting closer!!! LOL. :)

    Land prices / insane!!!

Noice! :) I really hadn't thought of that...but it makes sense, for sure.

    Land prices / insane!!!

I am unsure what the change in land valuations would be due to extended fiber, but I can say that we have fiber to our cabin now and we are in a pretty remote area. So you could definitely be on to something with that idea.

    EHD

I am right next to Van Buren in Davis and our neighborhood sounds just like yours. This was a VERY thin fall for hunting in our area, we only shot one buck. Normally, we would shoot 1 or 2 bucks and 6-10 does off of our place. All other neighbors had similar tales this year and probably 75%+...

    Which Implements?

Just curious...what is your planting process?

    Which Implements?

Just saw this...FWIW, I have a disc that I haven't used once in about 5 years. Meanwhile, my tiller is used second only to my brush hog mower. I too have rocks, and sometimes roots, to deal with...but it will mostly skip over them. I have yet to bind up/damage the tines with a rock. (An old...

    EHD

Yikes!! That is a grim pic, sorry to see that. I think our neighborhood will be about like that too. Ugh! Did you have the DNR give you a salvage tag every time you found one? I was thinking about asking them to let us report them in bulk, instead of one at a time, but I don't know if that...

    EHD

This. ^^ Based on pretty good trail cam data, we had bucks "disappearing" up until at least late October. I too have heard that the bucks antlers will not be polished if they die from EHD, due to timing really, but I am confident that this is not an "always" type of statement. Several of...

    Gray fox

I had a gray on on trail cam several times about 8 years ago now, as did a neighbor. I never saw it though, but the pics were clear, it was a gray. Heard of a roadkill south of Douds, IA, in about that same time frame. I think any place where a gray might be and coyote comes along...bye, bye...

    Food plot fencing

My corner posts are treated 6" x 6"s. Then I alternate metal T-posts and treated wood posts, I think on 10' increments. I think. But it is STOUT.

    Food plot fencing

My fence won't keep coons out, I am not sure any fence could. I deal with them separately.

    Trapping 2023-2024

Yes, but the "void" created by killing coyotes is going to get filled faster, or more slowly, depending on how many adjacent coyotes there are. If the region is heavily populated, yes, backfill will occur much more quickly. But, like what is found in my region, there aren't zillions of coyotes...

    Food plot fencing

I hope it is ethical...because I got sick and tired of destroyed corn and bean plots year after year, so we erected 3 areas last summer. By the time we got the fence up the plots were already suffering, so we only "capped off" one of them. But it definitely helped...we were able to get a corn...

    2023 Deer Harvest Report numbers

I don't often set for coyotes, so I am not an expert, but I can definitely attest to this. ^^ A few years ago I caught a bobcat in a dirthole and then reset it and got a coyote the next morning. (Resets are great, tons of scent left behind.) There was a light skiff of snow that night and the...

    Trapping 2023-2024

My opinion...those types of articles are misleading at best. Probably written by the same people that tried to tell us for several years that possums would eat all of the ticks. :) Now then, can I believe that "nature" would try to fill a gap? (I have seen literature that suggests that if you...
