Honest concern with Youth Hunter bucks shot…

If a 180 steps out in front of my young hunters they absolutely have the green light, if it's a close and humane shot. I just think in some of these cases the kid's parents set them up on monsters and have them pass deer up hoping to get the big boy. That's the difference as I see it anyhow.

Honest concern with Youth Hunter bucks shot…

My kids have been helping out with work for years before the hunt. I'm sure most the guys on this site have done it the same way.

Honest concern with Youth Hunter bucks shot…

Last year my 10 yr old got his 2.5 yr old 7 point on the 1st day of the real season. We didn't hunt the youth season. We may hunt the youth season someday, but we're always busy with work and just focus on the real seasons. I thought it was a perfect 1st deer for him. And so did he.

    Plot salvage 2

That's a good plan and based on those pics yes it'll do great and fill in those bare spots. When I spread if I get to a big bare spot I stop and keep flinging or fling in a 360 for a moment before walking again. I spread some yesterday and today it looked like grains were beginning germination...

Who do you prefer, DeSantis or Trump?

Isn't the fear with Haley is that she's just Romney/Mccain 3.0? Maybe with a globalist rino we'd be better off just crashing and burning the system to the ground quicker with a Dem and take it from there. My answer always used to be that any R is better than any D. But now I question that...

    At Least it Wasn’t a _ _ _ _ Broadhead

Wait for your animals to get close and take a guaranteed shot. Unfortunately there's always going to be bad shots. Human nature, old eyes, mechanical failure etc

    Fall harvest

Not doubting, but does kinda sound like a typical seed salesman story.

    What is next best???

What do you have already? I don't have a drill but do have a small sprayer and chopper. Along with a bag spreader I've been getting decent plots for the nearly decade it's been since I found Paul (dbltree) here on this site. Throw and grow, or mow and throw, or throw and mow. Sprayer and mower...

    Fall harvest

And to reiterate gunrunr's point about dry fields. Mudding a crop out of saturated fields is also a nightmare. Propane is cheap compared to the agony of a mudfest. Our driest corn hand tested 23% today, so add 2% more for what it would run from the combine, and we still have a week or more to...

    Fall harvest

Harvesting down corn is a nightmare. Everyone has a different style, but to us, standing corn is worth a lot. If a guy had 1 or 2 fields only, and could keep an eye on the forecast and keep checking the plant integrity, then it's fine to hold off. Another thing to mention is phanton yield...

    Pine trees for rubbing post

I have several going on year 3 and a couple on year 4. They'll keep pulling bucks in. I've never screwed a fresh cedar bough to the top of them, but I'm tempted to try it this year to just to get them scraping and sniffing a little more. They still come up and rub them and pose though.

    Rain

1.02" in my IL gauge here. Brassica plots were on life support or dead. Hope to see something positive. Heartbreaker was that I didn't have the good rain in the forecast so didn't spread the rye grain down in advance.

    Pine trees for rubbing post

Dude cedars are as good as anything in my opinion. It's all I use anymore. Handy if u can find 1 which already has the lower limbs rubbed off, which is fairly common here. Otherwise just put on your leather gloves and chainsaw them off. Multitask and save some redwood for your clothing tubs...

    WHICH DO U SHOOT?

Thanks Skip. I like these threads. Any more angles of the 4.5? And what your thought on his score is? These "jawbone" threads come up on the other forum where I'm at. One old guy who got booted once said he'd shoot the world record buck even if it had already shed out if it met his age...

    WHICH DO U SHOOT?

A few years ago I passed a buck that looked like the buck in the bottom pic. I misjudged him, based on many pics and lots of history. Figure he was 4.5 and scored mid 160s. Found both sheds and he was mid 180s. Nearly got him the next year, didn't take a risky shot. Neighbor got him day 2...

    WHICH DO U SHOOT?

I'd shoot the bottom one easily, as long as I knew for a fact he was at least 4.5. Doubtful I'd shoot the top one regardless of age. If he's deemed an old warrior then I'd hope my kids could connect. I only shoot one buck a year and it's usually only once every 3 or 4 years.
