Dang. So next shot would've been a blow up?

    Land Market Hasnt Slowed down

Every area is different, but in my home county (Lasalle, which is one of the top grain producers in IL) my guess is you could count on one hand the amount of single landowners approaching 1500 acres of tillable farmland, could possibly be zero. A few families are probably in the 2-3000 acre...

    Land Market Hasnt Slowed down

Point noted, but 7% probably still sounds cheap to the guys who lived through the 18-20%

    Land Market Hasnt Slowed down

"meaning most buyers in the space don't need to worry about federal monetary policy." With all due respect, I find that line and sentiment absolutely ludicrous. I agree it might appear farmers are overpaying, but that doesn't inherently mean they aren't financing. A sizeable downpayment...

    Land Market Hasnt Slowed down

That doesn't mean just land sales not being financed. It means all the land in the state. Land bought 40 or 100 years ago. I don't think the majority of farmer purchased sales these days are cash. Investment firms and 1031, yes. Maybe IA is different than here in IL.

    Land Market Hasnt Slowed down

Has the 1031 situation changed in the past several decades? I guess I feel like it hasn't. I also feel like farmers writing checks for farms over say 80 acres is happening way less than people think. Muskrat24, would you say farmers are writing checks for 160's that sell for north of...

    .350 Legend

Bought a 350 for the kids and a 450 for myself. I've read the 450 kicks less than a 20 gauge slug gun, which will be way less than the 12 gauge 3" I'm used to. The premium slugs we prefer can't be bought any longer, so made the call to transition to rifles.

    How many Deer?

Overall I don't think you'd pull many deer away from standing corn to a plot. Unless there are other factors going on.

    Nasty-Tough

These pictures are crazy. If I kill a buck I usually pat him and say sorry fella I bet you had a lot of good times running around down here. Now I just feel like we're putting them out of their misery and doing them a favor.

    Starting to think cell cams….

Maybe it's been said, cell cams are probably best at getting big bucks killed by showing one has shown up on a certain food plot or in a little patch of woods now for 3 consecutive days, so it's time to go set up on him. Allows guys to totally avoid a killer food source until the time is...

    450 Bushmaster Bullets

I see they're sold out of the 285 grain ammo due to high demand, but they have the 240 grain high velocity round in stock. It costs a few dollars more, but pretty close. Which round is the way to go?

    Heated vest recommendations

He only wore it once. I'm probably a terrible parent but the morning it was 9 I said I'm wearing it and I stuck some adhesive warming pads on his core. (Still sissy by historical standards but oh well). Later tonight I'll get a pic of him wearing it over a tee-shirt and show you. Seems like...

    Heated vest recommendations

I like the Pnuma heated vest quite a bit. Came in handy for gun 1 in IL this weekend. Predawn was 9 degrees this am. My 10 year old now hunts with me (he got his 1st deer Fri morn on his 1st sit while wearing my Pnuma) and my 3 younger ones are all begging to tag along again, so I'm giving...

    Passing bucks and success rate

I like your comment and agree. Where I'm torn is what happens when you give someone a fringe spot and they struggle to kill one or see enough to be happy. Then they give you the sob story and ask for a spot that's "just a little bit further in"? Or if they get a deer or 2 on your fringe spot...

    Cross Dominance (Eye to Hand)

My son is 10 and just getting to age he'll be doing some hunting. We discovered when he was 6 he was left eye dominant (right handed). I did a lot of research at that time, and concluded he'd be better off learning to shoot left handed. He started that day with nerf and toy guns and never...

    Brassicas

Haha that's cool. I had a nice thin acre of sugarbeets growing early this summer and the deer ate all the plants weeks ago! As planned, PTT and GFR got spread into the plot later summer and now are looking OK, with cereal rye spread heavy 2 weeks ago to fill in the gaps. I'd be surprised if...

Dwarf essex rape. I also used to plant that but now stick with just PTT and Groundhog radish.

    How many trail cams?

Usually average 10-12 on 200 acre farm. None are cell cams. I'd also like to start cutting back and maybe get down to 3 or 4 total on the best plots. I'm still early enough in my hunting life that I love knowing what's out there. Before cams, I hated shooting mistake bucks (young ones) and...

    Consensus on 2022 antler growth

Some bucks finally just showed up to our farm (which is a doe factory) on yesterday's card pulls. I'd say very poor antler growth. We didn't have a dry growing season at all. Pretty decent rains scattered throughout the summer. Not sure if whole farms will be record breaking but some...
