I set a stand today on some ground that is amazing. I fell into the opportunity to hunt this parcel almost on accident. It is so prime everybody should hate me for it. Feel free to do so.
That is all.
Also, I forgot, go the extra mile and take a 4' level with you. My brother-in-law has a stand he built that slopes to one side and I hate even looking at it...let alone sitting in it.
I have a few stick built stands out there. Here are a few tips:
1) Ues treated 2x6's for the framing and something like 60D pole barn spikes.
2) I have taken to building the framework of treated lumber and just setting used pallets on top of the treated frame. I replace the pallet every...
There is an absolute brute of a 250" deer in the DNR building this year. One of the coolest deer I've ever seen. They're also displaying an ATV confiscated from a poacher. For the uninitiated, all the deer and items in this area have been taken from poachers.
There is also a very neat...
I was setting up in the yard against a big locust tree and I couldn't get the bottom section to stick in the ground when I raised it. If I had been in the timber I kept telling myself I could have wedged a log or something against the bottom to get it raised up.
The teeter-totter was comical...
I'm the proud new owner of a very nice stand. I like this one very much. Stable, comfortable, and really tall.
A word to the wise: you'll need two guys to get this thing tipped up against a tree. The seat makes the stand so top heavy that you become the fulcrum in a teeter-totter when you...
Justify it to youself however you'd like, but you're going to be breaking the law if you carry that handgun in the matter you described earlier this week. That alone is reason not to do it.
Thanks for the replies.
I am going to stick with my plan to try the "new" locker. The proprietors are friends of my father in law. He's taken his archery deer there for the past two years and had great results and gotten his own meat back every year. We process our own deer, but we each like...
I'm planning on trying a new locker this year. This locker wants me to bring my deer to them as a field dressed carcass, with the hide still on. They charge extra is the hide if not on the carcass when I bring it in.
My old locker required all deer meat to be boned out when it was brought...
Is it possible to reach back and take an arrow from the quiver while you're wearing the Cat Quiver?
The biggest buck I've shot so far was taken as I walked to my truck from the stand. I had an arrow nocked for just such an occasion...but I killed a tree with my first shot. I was able to nock...
I know a guy who has a 214" shoulder mount laying on its back in the corner of his living room. I've only been to his house 3 or 4 times...the last time was in January and his kids had some winter coats piled on top of it.
This is the real deal.
I was in Phoenix this past April and saw one of his chain gangs, decked out in pink, working the median and ditches along Shea Blvd. The crew was complete with a few deputies toting what appeared to be riot guns of the 12 gauge variety standing back watching them work...
I hunt the river bottom in Tama County quite often.
The cover along the bottoms can be real dense. The timber's are mostly soft maple, locust, and ash. There are pockets of oak and good hardwood timber but they don't seem common.
Overall I think it's a great area to hunt. Especially if there...
I've never been into birds on a consistent basis like I was on every hunt 2nd season. It was awesome. Each sit was different, but very exciting.
I ended up killing a behemoth Monday morning before the sun broke the horizon.
I have to go back to work in about 9 hours and I'm wishing I could...
