    brush in or not?

follow up It appears to have had little effect on deer movement. We have two blinds on this plot to "hunt the wind", one out in open and the other is concealed ok. I have plot watcher pictures of a lot of deer including mature does and bucks before and after blind placement in daylight. It...

    The Christmas Buck

Congratulations to you and your family. I was able to "guide" all three of my youth season girls to a buck this year. Two of them being there first deer. Wonderful memories to have with the kids!

    What is herd carrying capacity

The river bottom tract is short of 500 acres . 50\50 mix timber and WRP surrounded by similar land on both sides and vast ag land with some scattered timber other directions. We have twenty acres of food plots with brassicas, clover, alfalfa, rye and oats. There appears to be good numbers to...

    What is herd carrying capacity

We appear to have a healthy herd on the farm that I hunt predominantly. We harvest some does but have slowed this the past few years due to the herd being down from where it was years ago. What is a sustainable number of deer to try to maintain on our farm? How can you determine this? Tough...

    Late season tips?

Assuming the timbers and grass you hunt are bedding areas. Put yourself between the "stuff" where they bed. More than likely thick and\or secluded and what they will be feeding on without letting them know you are in the area. Entry and exit without getting busted, playing the wind, scent...

Cross Bows in Iowa....? I hope not

I do not believe that most of us wanting to keep crossbows only for the disabled hunters in Iowa are "putting hunters against hunters". We are simply trying to keep a valuable resource that we all love sustainable. We are stating what we believe the negatives of allowing there use would be...

    Locker's

Looking for any suggestions on a good locker in central\NE Iowa...say north of I-80 and east of I-35. Looking more for "processed" meats. Sticks, sausage, etc. Wanting to try another locker for something different. Currently use Edgewood and still will with some meat but looking for another...

    Worth a Read!

I agree that we need to kill less does in most areas...as I believe most of you on IW regularly would also agree. The problem I have is that the same guys who preached herd management and buck to do ratios for years are NOW saying WHOA...stop killing does! I know EHD really compounded this...

Cross Bows in Iowa....? I hope not

no more I have no problem with a disabled hunter being "allowed" to use a crossbow...but without continuing to debate the "effective kill range" of compounds vs. crossbow. It is definitely perceived by the average hunter out here that crossbows are more like a gun, easier to shoot, and have a...

    Which Muzzle loader

2x I was glad I bought a second so I would be able to take my kids muzzleloader hunting in the future...more convenient for me so I do not have to carry different powders or clean multiple guns in evening. Hope you are able to enjoy a "smokeless" muzz in the future. Not much more $ to find a...

    Which Muzzle loader

Glad I have two also. Bought my first 10 ml II years ago when first out on the market and now several other friends have followed suit. Is one of my favorite weapons to shoot. Low recoil even with a 300 gr. barnes original pushed over 2000 fps by 44 gr. of AA5744, and you can even see where...

    brush in or not?

Ok guys...do you feel hunting blinds need to be brushed in or hidden in the cover (trees, brush, grass, etc. ). We placed pop up blinds out this last week for gun\muzzle seasons. Got in a discussion between ourselves if it is going to bother activity. We didn't agree so put out a test blind...

    Brassica use now??

plot feeding As of two weeks ago following the first cold snap, the deer started to key in on certain plots of ours and began foraging heavily on the remaining tops. Some bulb feeding but predominately feeding on the leaves. We plant a blend similar to dbltrees mix with turnips and rape for...

    Anybody out there

good night Saw 6 different bucks and probably around fifteen does. Sat off bedding area next to a large food plot. Had to slither in to stand as was a doe already out feeding at 2:45. One of our target bucks was there when I got there but went the wrong way. I guess I get to keep hunting!
