    Hounds

Yeah, most times the hunter hardly ever leaves the truck, maybe to step out to shoot at a coyote crossing the road. I've seen the hunter up on his truck holding the antennas above his head trying to get signal from the dog's collar. This helps them know where the dogs are headed to try to get...

    Farm Contract Recommendations

Iowa's topsoil is due mainly to the thatch of prairie building up and decaying on top of the ground. Now when it comes to alfalfa, the roots have nodules where symbiotic bacteria fix nitrogen. For that to become available, the plant needs to die.

    Farm Contract Recommendations

One of the best things you can do for a garden is till in all the leaves you rake off the yard, add in some old leftover big bale the cows didn't eat and stomped/crapped in, clean out the straw from the stalls, all plant material will improve the tilth of the soil.

The Future of Iowa Deer Hunting and a One Buck Limit

Quite some time ago, I contacted a local D Rep (MM) and she told me she wasn't backing this. She said if I wanted to support the DNR, I should buy the special vehicle license plates......

The Future of Iowa Deer Hunting and a One Buck Limit

Talking to a fellow hunter yesterday who was a little miffed about a $33 deer tag. My comment was that I hunted 50 hours on it, so less than a dollar an hour. What else would I be able to do as entertainment for that kind of money? Not going to a movie, not going out to eat, been a long time...

Chopping silage removes all of the corn plant and ears and leaves the ground vulnerable to erosion unless cover crops are planted. Does the tenant chop silage?

The Future of Iowa Deer Hunting and a One Buck Limit

Yeah, heard this before. What was it, 10 or 12 years ago there was a major push to shoot the deer herd back into the 1970's. Many hunters complied; I was unfortunately one. What was my reward? Did FB thank me? Did the insurance companies lower my auto insurance? No, it was more profit for...

    Fencing Deer Movement

I've read where people tie down an existing fence in a certain spot so that deer cross there. I would guess this is fences with barbed wire over the top, maybe not. Do people have issues with that? Earlier last fall, I spread Milorganite in an area in an attempt to change deer travel...

    Keep on shooting the trophies

Maybe we need a rifle season during the rut to cull out the trophies to slow the spread of CWD.
