I would consider doing this but it would have to be the perfect partner. If it doesn’t work out it may also ruin a really good friendship. Other things to consider is if one partner has kids that want to hunt and the other doesn’t. Or siblings….or friends….or. Could be lots of things leading...
Reading all this makes me have reservations about the cellular game! Data plan plus more expensive cards, plus more batteries, adds up quick for multiple cams!
I am planning to plant a few hundred bonus trees such as persimmon, chestnut, and crabapples. Someone told me Dolgo Crabapples are the ticket for deer? I will tube these trees. My hope is exactly what Skip suggested that there will be so many trees that success from deer damage will be better...
Maybe, however my experience is that only the last couple weeks are good hunting. Takes about two weeks for the deer yo settle back down after being pushed around by shotgun groups. Obviously that is highly dependent on how pressured your area is during shotgun seasons.
Yes it will be a ton of work but nibbling off little bits at a time. Getting some food plots going this spring along with about 45ac in rowcrop to start the eligibility process for CRP. Next spring 50ac of trees and then hopefully start working on a phased EQIP for more trees, shrubs, and...
Thanks for all the recommendations! Tree tubes have to be very limited as I will be doing 30,000 trees and tubes/stakes are about $7/ea. No idea how the deer browse problem will be yet. This pasture had not historically had too many deer on it but it has always been grazed very low.
Hello all. Update on this project brewing. As mentioned previously this is a 160ac rolling hill pasture that is being taken out of cattle grazing. There is sizeable timber to the north and to the south of the pasture with rowcrop and hay to east and west. There is a small creek that runs...
Looks like a nice farm! I am very interested in the responses as well. I posted several months ago that i am converting a rolling hill pasture into hunting habitat and debating on planting natives or trees/shrubs. More than likely it will be a combination of both, just not sure what mix...
This sounds like a great idea! My farm is in SE Iowa and fairly new to me. I would love to get some input from all you experts on projects/improvements to do if you ever wanted to do SE Iowa.
I had a skidsteer with forestry mulcher clean up a hillside that had 2-5” trees growing about 2’ apart. The guy charged $140/hr and did about 1.5ac per 8 hour day. My trees were extremely dense but not real big. He ground them up and then stuck the mulcher down into the soil and back drug it...
I am interested in responses to this as well. I like the steps that Sure Shot laid out and curious if others agree with those steps. I am halfway through my first year of trying this as well. I already frost seeded clover into my 1/2 that is brassicas, sounds like I need to do some oats as well.
I noticed the comment in the OP about deer not liking enlist beans as well. I have read that before but questioned the validity. I have several acres of enlist beans that look great but didn’t get hammered. Lots of beans still in pods. Makes me believe there is truth to not liking enlist...
