The farm these are on was overrun with turkeys before and needed to be thinned out. They aren't hunted much if at all there. I think most game birds are in for a tough run unless more people pick up predator hunting and the DNR allows all the red hawks perched on every other fencepost to be...
My buddy got another great picture on his trail camera this last pull. I think it's pretty special to get one picture of a bobcat on trail camera, but this one is just crazy..
This camera get's some strange stuff. He had a series on this camera a couple years ago of an owl killing and...
No where in there did I say I look down on people who hunt for the enjoyment. I love hunting and just want it to continue to be good for years to come. Not just for me but for everybody. However if we continue to hunt just because tags are available, enjoyment may become a thing of the past...
Why do people seen to think they need deer meat to fill the freezer. While for some people this may be a necessity but for the vast majority of us it is not and we have other options to feed ourselves throughout the year.
Personally I'm finding spikes more plentiful than does. That is what...
Compared to the damage all these antlerless tags do to our deer population, I have to think the poacher impact is fairly minimal (illegal and unethical as all get out) but impact on population has to be low. I bet roadkill causes more damage to the population than poachers.
EHD, too many...
I drove from Iowa city to Des Moines last week. 3 roadkill deer, one was missing its head. Only seen maybe 10 deer in the fields the entire trip. That trip 5 years ago that time of day I would have seen 100.
Maybe we need one of these whitetail organizations to step up and buy all the doe...
I shot one in the fog a few years back. It was cool hearing them before you could see them. Then seeing the rack emerge from the fog made for a super cool hunt. Called him into within 10 yards before I shot him.
Ya, the first two steps can generally be put in the tree. If you have a muddy harness they sell the step clips you can add to it so you can attach 2 steps to it. If not I generally hang one from the second step and one hand the other up.
As for your stand and bow, I carry 2 ropes and attach...
I'm giving the ice fishing sled a shot this year. Carts work but suck when going over downed limbs and uneven surfaces.
I'm no help on rigs to get them out of the ravine other than praying they run uphill after the shot.
Take a look at the Muddy Ultra Mount system. I bought that and adapted it to my muddy stand and talk about quick and easy set up. Only drawback I can see is that you lose the ability to pack your sticks on the stand. If they fix that, I would never consider a LW. Muddy sticks are way better...
I like Winkie's advice on aiming and planning for a drop. Inside 20 pick your spot and shoot. Don't expect a drop at that distance. Outside of that plan for an 8 inch drop and aim at the heart or bottom of the body.
Buck to doe ratio is way out of whack in all the timber I've been in this year even in the southern tier counties. Way more bucks than does from what I'm seeing. Either that or the does are all fluzies and arent making the bucks chase them anymore.
I hunted hard the last 6 days. Over that span seen maybe 20 total deer. Biggest buck was a forky and maybe 4 does. Zero sign of any rut going on. I was after one specific buck and her never showed. That was some of the toughest hunting I've ever experienced, but back at it this weekend.
