Things that make me go Hmmmmm....Land Prices

Saw a piece of ground listed recently in SE Iowa, the $3K per acre caught my eye. Read the fine print to see it was enrolled in WRP, dead stop right there....

I think I saw bigfoot at the IBA banquet last night. ;)

From the research I've been doing, most true sawmills that the average person would be able to afford limit the width of cut. That is why I went down the chainsaw rabbit hole.....

22’ oak log. It’s a yard tree so will probably loose teeth on the saw chain. It needs rotated before cutting. 36" tall, 39" across the end. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Burning corn residue?

Burning: ground will be blackened, and soil temps will rise for germination of seed. If it turns dry, might lose moisture for germination/young plants. Not burning: Corn litter will act as mulch. Will prevent erosion and evaporation of soil moisture. Tough call, advantages to both approaches.

Not a wood expert, but I think for veneer, you'd have to go below the 6' limb by a fair stretch to avoid the grain of the wood headed the direction of the limb. How low though? Probably lower the interest in the log is my guess.

If they are actually doing this, our current weather patterns are what they seek? I think that is the crux of the issue, they can't predict the outcomes, so stop playing Mother Nature. Does Elon and Donald know about this? What is their view? Seems prime for DOGE cuts.

    Spraying vs burning crp?

Brush hog then followed up with an older spool type hay rake to get the mowed grass piled up against the standing grass. Worked pretty well for our burns. Done smaller burns solo and did 115 acres of mature switch one spring but had a crew of 8 for that one.

Cedar caging and tree herbicide program

Cedars seem to be a weed/invasive species in eastern IA. Deer browse pressure and rubbing is minimal, such that I wouldn't bother caging them. If you mulch/mow/spray, they should take off. Don't have much experience with Norway's.

    Roadkill

Yeah, I get its spring dispersal, but are drivers blind?

    Roadkill

The amount of roadkill lately is stunning. I swear if there were two deer left in the state, motorists would run over three of them. ;):( With fewer deer around (hunting and EHD), are drivers becoming complacent?

    Thorny Locust Removal

Got to thinking more about this. At work, the toxic and hazardous chemicals are collected with them eventually going out of state where they are burned at high temperatures. Not 100% sure but I was told that they use the heat generated in part of the cement making process. Snip/link below...

    Thorny Locust Removal

Concerns on burning herbicide killed trees as firewood? I’d rather not, but seems like a waste. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
