If you want to spend every morning checking fence, put a strand of hot wire 4-6" above the woven wire fence. The deer WILL spin it down into the fence EVERY night. Needs to be six inches below the top on the side of the fence holding the livestock.
Neighbor told me he thinks a buck shed out on our farm, haven't found anything the two times I've looked. I had to slow down for a 2.5 yr old 10 standing on the highway last night on the way to the farm, both sides still intact.
I've found my share of the above trapped deer with the back leg spun in the fence. This year had a first. A fawn tried to jump through a woven wire fence about two feet up, got the head and front legs through but hips wouldn't fit through and back legs were off the ground. Found it about a...
While maybe not blocking vision once they lose their leaves, they grow thick enough to block a shot from the road. I'm fighting willows that are taking over the shoreline of a wetlands. :(
I got depressed walking the farm today, lots of chainsaw time in my near future. Tons of Russian olive, wild cherry, box elder and locust all over. That's a little overkill, LOL. I can't even justify the skid steer version Skip posted recently.
I found a website the other day when I googled "acreages for sale in western Colorado". The site had all states listed, just pan around and click on the listing. From what I saw, the website looked to be dedicated for high end listings, most starting at a $1,000,000. Only one listing caught...
I’ve got too many Boxelders and hate them. Trash tree IMO. I don’t like the way it smells when burning. Spread like weeds. One thing I’ve wanted to try is the knot hole mushrooms that grow where a branch broke off.

Thanks for the Gingerich expose Daver. ;)
I had Gingerich Well out to the farm last week to replace a leaking pressure switch on the water tank down the basement of the farmhouse. They put the well in back in 1991 and have come out to fix broken water lines, trench to add livestock waterers...
That's where I was uncertain since I did not know much about the parent oak tree. Squirrels keep planting acorns in the yard, some local reds, some local white oak acorns. Need to get some white oaks started (besides the Swamp White's that have been producing mast for the last 5 years).
Guess it isn't plumbed? I'd want to have a septic tank buried so a bathroom/shower/sink could be installed. That's gotta add $10K to $20K, right? I see Gingerich signs locally announcing they have gotten into septic install. Think it's the same group we had put the well in. Add $20K for...
Transplanted this black oak when it sprouted in the yard. Got two of them side by side at the farm, no regrets. Saw deer vacuuming up acorns from the parent tree this past winter.

What kind of budget are the people going this route setting? Granted it varies widely, just looking for ballpark numbers on one with "a small modern living area". Enough room for two vehicles and a small boat, maybe a tractor.
