    Hanging deer

When I cut up my own deer more often, back in the day, I would often hang them for several days prior to butchering. I remember reading, pre-internet and YouTube :), on the subject and the French in particular would commonly hang game and fowl for much longer than I could ever bring myself to...

    Transporting redneck blind

Based upon personal experience, I can tell you what NOT to do. :) Do NOT rely on the factory supplied pallet that they come on. (It doesn't sound like this is applicable to the OP situation though.) I had a pallet break in transport due to pretty janky wood...well that allowed the otherwise...

    Brassicas

Speaking specifically to planting brassicas at this time in SE Iowa, where I am also located BTW... IMO, you are kind of late, but not way too late. :) I would adjust my ratio and go heavier with radishes and lesser on turnips at this stage of the year. Turnips are hardier in the winter, but...

Tell me why we should shoot more does

FWIW, I got an education on land segmentation, and also strict, strict trespassing regulations about 25 years ago when I traveled to extreme southern Texas for a hog hunt. There, this phenomenon was well under way at that time and had not yet become a "thing" back here in Iowa. The wise hosts...

Tell me why we should shoot more does

I agree with everything you wrote ^^ and would add this factor too...land segmentation. As parcel sizes shrink, there are often more "good" hunters on fewer acres, particularly in good areas. Armed with trail cams, cell cams, and as someone else said above...far more skill and understanding of...

Tell me why we should shoot more does

It has way more to do with the cover and habitat than it does the county. I might have too many deer in prime habitat and just a section or two over it is mostly bare, ag ground with very few deer on it. FWIW, even after getting whacked hard by EHD last year, I am already back to not being...

Tell me why we should shoot more does

I agree. ^^ I can say though that while I see far fewer deer out and about as I travel to and from my farm, we still, until EHD hit us last summer, have too many in our area. I know that is difficult to comprehend for some that are seeing FAR fewer deer in their area of the state, but it is...

    Need rain bad

Yay! ^^ I finished planting brassicas on Saturday, 8/10, and for the first time in YEARS, I had discernable soil moisture present while so doing. 1. We have had good rain throughout the summer. 2. I had left a goodly amount of rye thatch on the surface that kept things from drying out. 3. I...

I am also a Tree Hopper user, very good tool. Mine is only a belt though, not a full body harness.

20 Years of Non Resident Hunting Iowa, My 5th Tag This Year, I'm Psyched!

Sheesh...it seems like Monroe County is always on the EHD List. Yikes. FWIW, I too think that EHD can happen in a wet year too, once it dries out some and water levels drop a bit. Whatever conditions leave exposed mud behind can do it.

    Wow Just Wow....... Land Prices

I totally agree ^^. The land market is definitely softer now than 1-2+ years ago, as potential buyers that are influenced by lower commodity prices and/or higher interest costs have been shaved back. But the dudes with cash...still have cash, for the most part AND as IowaBowHunter said...that...

    Land Clearing

Skid it for a day, use a regular chain saw for another day or two, plant AND fence some potted oaks for the future and see how it goes for a year or two.

    Land Clearing

Is someone possibly slipping in the backside and scooping sheds on you? Looking at your photos...to me, you could rent a skidsteer with a mulching head for a day and somewhat randomly whack pockets here and there and create multiple "zones" where sunlight can get to the ground and leave other...

    Switchgrass

How late in the summer would you recommend planting? I have a bag of switch that I could drill in now. TIA.

    Need rain bad

My app told me this morning that we got another 4" yesterday at our farm. That is on top of about 3" more inches since Sunday. I kid you not when I say that is substantially more, as in 5" or 6" more, than we have received in other years for the whole summer. Time to build an ark! :)

    Need rain bad

Good question. I am wondering the same thing. :) Obviously, if your field(s) experienced run off, you could be looking at filling in some bare spots. But I think the bigger risk is all this rain and then possibly little to no rain over the next 3 weeks or so. If that manifests, then bare...

    Need rain bad

We must be sharing clouds...we have got about that much too since Sunday evening. Planted 2 acres of rutabagas and an acre of soybeans mixed with turnips and radishes. Will be curious to see how that worked out.

    Need rain bad

Just a little more info on the "wet" spots that I encountered the other day. These were in a field that was planted to rye/etc last year and then allowed to grow this spring until about 3 weeks ago when we mowed it. Then a week later, I sprayed it with gly. There was still plenty of rye...
