    Brassicas

I know that brassica plots should be in by the 29th of July. Being in far Northeast Iowa would it be okay to put them in now? I know we are about a week or two ahead of Southern Iowa as far as the first frost. Looks like a good rain coming the next couple of days and then nothing afterwards...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Well the rye, oats and peas are in and rain is plentiful. Only casualty is I didn’t check my bag early enough and Welters sent me someone else’s order. I didn’t get my clover and turnips. So scratch them and frost seed in spring or reorder and put down in a week or two?

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Thanks Daver, I did a good plowing this year so soil compaction isn't an issue now but them eating the tops is an added bonus. Now we just need rain after I plant this weekend.

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

In doing rye, oats, peas, radishes and clover how important are the radishes? With my turnips/radishes close by I don't see any advantage having them. I also don't think they will get very big to actually make a difference? Thoughts?

    Brassicas

A week ago Sunday they had almost an inch of rain, none since. Brought the cultipacker back to the house at 10 Saturday night after last pass after seeding it. Yes, we plowed it up this time and smoothed it out with the disc. It really needed it because we haven't done it in the last 10 years...

    Brassicas

I knew when I get ready to plant turnips every year the drought will hit. Looks like the same thing this summer.

When you use treated Urea does it come that way or do you have to pre-treat it?

    Brassicas

With rain looking sparse after this weekend and planning to plant this weekend any thoughts on fertilizing? If we plow it in, then disc and then smooth and pack will the urea hold for awhile?

    Clover

What is the seeding rate everyone is using when frost seeding into turnips? I assume go half that if frost seeding into rye, oats, peas and clover from last fall? I know it might be overkill frost seeding into the rye, oats, peas and clover from last fall but I like a little insurance.

    Rye,OATS,,Wheat for sure

I think a lot of people are in the same boat. Will cutting back the rye, oats, peas and radishes kill or stunt any growth? Thinking it will the wheat, peas and radishes? Maybe just leave it alone?

How much Clethodim should be used versus crop oil? Same for grass in Brassicas?

    Turkey Seasons

Totally agree Doug, Especially on everything that youth have going on, it is really hard to get out. Why not give them the best and easiest time of the year, it is also the coldest. People overlook the late season a lot. I think that happens because the birds don't come screaming in right off...

    Turkey Seasons

I agree Muddster. I actually would think that people would be glad that season would be open later to hunt more. I could go to the end of the month like Nebraska and would recruit a youth every weekend.

    Turkey Seasons

Boomer, Thought I already did that for you, telling you why two weekends. You must not have kids? I have also been like Blaster and had two kids to take hunting. Unfortunately we could only go every other weekend because of my situation like Mathew. FYI, I took a youth first day, second day and...

    Turkey Seasons

I don't really have a dog in the fight anymore but normally that first weekend is really cold. Last year it was around 14-20 degrees. Year before was cold to. What is hurting if a youth gets the woods to themselves at that time for back to back weekends what does that hurt? Right now I'm for...

    Turkey Seasons

Thank you for your reply. I don't really understand why they didn't leave the youth at the two weekends and let the season end a week later. Late season turkey hunting is just starting to get real good. It is always like that and didn't understand the thought put into it at all.

I might of missed it on here somewhere, but what was the reasoning behind the youth season only three days and closing the season a week earlier? Some of the best hunting was just starting to occur IMHO.
