Buckwheat hulls work great for frozen ground trapping. Apply your pan cover, bed the trap with some dry dirt. Cover with hulls then more dry dirt to blend. I have been using "underalls" with my MB-550's. It is a scent free foam piece that goes under the pan.
It looks like muscle blood to me. Maybe hit the shoulder blade and tucked 10" of arrow shaft along the bone. Most kids bows aren't pulling max poundage.That deer will be gimped up but will probably survive if that is the case. Bummer for the kid though.

My two boys set some traps around our place and I threw out some 2-20's in some road ditches on my way to work this week. We are having a little luck.
