Tough to beat the 870. I've got a "proven" youth model in the basement with the turkey choke installed and ready to roll. Just haven't found a youth to run it the last couple seasons. Not sure where you're located but your kids could try it out for the season if I could get it to ya.

Sst slugs are just hole punchers. They are very accurate but no expansion. I bought a bunch a few years ago and will continue to use them until they are gone. I've killed 3 bucks with them over the last 3 seasons and all have died in sight (all double lung) so they can easily get the job done...
