    Switchgrass failure due to foxtail??

What is a good rate for liquid Quinclorac?

    Switchgrass

It was Pheasants Forever Cave In Rock seed drilled June 17. It was probably 10-12” in places when I mowed.

    Switchgrass

What should the plan be for switch that was drilled mid last June? About 75% of it had a good stand, but seemed to be set back after the 2nd mowing due to lack of rain. It was also sprayed in problem areas with Quinclorac to knock back the foxtail. I'm thinking about taking my Brundt drill out...

Land value chart over time for iowa...

I purchased 100 acres 13 months ago and there were farms to choose from in the general area I was looking. A global pandemic hit and our economy came to a screetching halt....and then the rec land market went bonkers. I don't see prices getting better until the number of hunters drops, but you...

    Spacing on Shrubs/Conifers

Wasn't part of your question about spacing and using cedars? Just pay attention to what you see next time you drive down an interstate. Along I-80 in Iowa, the state uses several different styles of plantings between private and government land that are usually a combination of cedars, shrubs...

    Spacing on Shrubs/Conifers

The question is, what kind of death loss should one expect with a planting on a clay hillside?

    Spacing on Shrubs/Conifers

I defer to the district forester on how many trees are to be planted per acre. If you want them to help with cost, you have to follow their plan. I'm converting an old pasture that has some pretty good hills that is surrounded by a new planting of switch grass. Right now, the acres have zero...

    Spacing on Shrubs/Conifers

I'm wondering if the plan takes into consideration death loss. I can always go in and thin out some areas, or transplant after a year or two to another area of the farm if everything is living.

    Spacing on Shrubs/Conifers

I am working with the Iowa Soil and Water Conservation to convert 3 acres of hilly pasture back to trees with wildlife (esp deer) in mind. I wanted to do Red Cedar. The plan the district forester came up with is rows 10' apart with the trees planted 7' apart in the row (600 trees/acre).

Worse? This or the missing backstrap buck?

His femur isn't broken. The bump sticking out on his back is the wing of his pelvis, more than likely. The bulk of his problem will be comming from the infected/broken joint above his foot effectively making him 3-legged. Since it is his back leg, running, jumping, etc is going to be very difficult.

    Shoulder blade penetration

I had a single lung hit 4-5 years ago, but that was a complete pass through with no liver involvement. I waited 4 hours to begin tracking (we waited 7.5 hours for this one) and kicked him out of his bed 100 yards away. Checked the bed and there was blood, so I waited 1/2 hour and began...

    Shoulder blade penetration

Luckily the guy hunting on the other side of the fence is a really nice guy from Louisanna that we ran into the evening of the search. He is keeping an eye out for us. I'm a veterinarian so I guess I have probably over-analysed the shot placement and evidence found. I think I got very little...

    Shoulder blade penetration

Shot a buck on Thursday morning at about 18 yards quartering slightly to me. 350 grain arrow tipped with a Grim Reaper 1 3/8" expandable hit what I think was the back half of the shoulder blade. The front 6" (at best) broke off inside the buck as he ran off (no limp, and did jump a 4' fence)...

    Question on shot

One thing that most people probably don't realize is that the liver is located on the right side of the abdominal cavity (between the body wall and the midline of the abdomen). The large rumen (holding tank of 4-part stomach) is why. So dependiing on which side the deer is hit and the angle...

    Central Iowa Hunter Killed

One out of 3 hunters will fall at some point in their hunting career. I started using a Prussic knot for safety when climbing and getting into and out of my stands. Get some good braided climbing rope at Menards, Lowes, etc (looks like mountain climbing rope). I tie it around my tree at the...

    Lost one

If there was "bright pink" blood on the arrow my guess would still be a lung hit. I have operated on hundreds of cows and muscle blood is just a plain red color, nothing pink about it. A muscle hit would coat the entire arrow, or at least have tallow on the other 1/2 of the arrow if it passed...

    Lost one

Here is a posibility: with the angle of the doe and the angle of the arrow comming from your tree stand I think you may have only hit the top of the off-side lung. If the arrow went through the very top of the inside of the chest cavity this would give you the blood on only one side of the arrow...

    Lethal Shot Question

The descending aorta runs from the heart towards the rear of the deer just under the backbone in the abdominal cavity. If you cut that, the deer will die just as quick or quicker than a double lung. I have had to euthanise cows that way when a surgery hasn't gone quit as planned. There is...

    Using ground blinds

I have a pop-up blind similar to a double bull in design(ameristep brickhouse) and was wondering if you think the "black hole" effect of only opening a few windows frightens of alerts deer if they aren't used to seeing the blind? Do deer need time to acclimate to the blind, unlike turkeys...
