    Iowa's Top 10 Outdoors Stories for 2011

One rooster can breed 100 hens. We need much more than a few added roosters surviving for the population to rebound, and I don't think it lies in winter cover as the article states. Winter cover is vital, don't get me wrong, but there are so many other factors pushing the bird population into...

People hunting right along our fence lines

This is somewhat why I didn't want to get into it online. Legal action is super tough on things like this. The sheriffs department knows about the thefts as I've reported them; however, it is difficult to investigate or prosecute without extremely hard evidence. To be honest, the only thing I...

People hunting right along our fence lines

I've avoided really getting into this conversation because I am personally connected to the guy who started the topic, and I don't think anything can really get accomplished by bickering online, but I do want to illustrate another side of things that few have failed to mention above. Like some...

People hunting right along our fence lines

That is just a suggestion. Here is an alternate route to take: 1.) Lets first try hanging dryer sheets and soap from the fence around his treestand to see if that will keep the deer away. 2.) When that doesn't work, lets take the treesteps out of the bottom of his treestand (while...

People hunting right along our fence lines

Always helps to talk to your neighbors . . . 'battling' the neighbor almost always results in poorer hunting for everyone involved.

    Deer Feeders

You are legal, especially if it is empty during the hunting season. If you feed during the hunting season, you cannot hunt deer over it NOR can you hunt deer that are traveling to or from it.

    Shot question

Obviously, the shot wasn't ideal, but I think with the right bow, the shot is more ethical. I shoot 58 pounds and my bow isn't extremely hard-hitting. Bill, I believe, shoots a 70+ pound bow with some knock-down power. At that angle, a harder hitting set-up WILL help the shot be more...

The Harvest Of Full House 182 4/8 Video...take a look!

When we gutted him, it looked like the arrow took a quarter-chunk out of his right lung (literally took a chunk off of it and the lung was sitting against the exit wound), passed in front of the heart, and possibly clipped his esophagus. (2 blade rage and zipped right through him) It entered...

    Timber Floor noise

On permanent stand locations I go in and rake a path after the leaves have fallen.... usually about now is a good time to do it. Of course, some leaves eventually make their way back into the path over time, but it is a VAST improvement over shin deep leaves..... can really make a big...

    Acorns to Oaks!

Do you have any pictures? Specifically, pictures of a few acorns, some buds, and a few different leaves (all three with a ruler or something for size reference). A photo of the tree as a whole and of the bark would be helpful as well.

    Oak Tree Questions

Question 1: Oak wilt is most harmful on the red oak species, but it can affect whites. Bur oak is more susceptible than white oak with regards to the white oaks. In fact, white oak almost NEVER gets it, but bur can be susceptible under the right circumstances. Usually, if bur oak is...

    Acorns to Oaks!

Generally, burs produce large crops at more even intervals than white oaks (every 2-3 years for bur, and every 3-5 for white). While that will vary to some extent (weather plays a big role, etc.), generally speaking, burs are more consistent. A good white oak crop is always a good thing :way:
