They eat them when they're growing in the summer or the dried heads in the fall?

    Cedar tree removal

Anyone ever try this idea: in the winter when there's snow on the ground, take a weedburner, drip torch, whatever and light up cedar trees one by one. Our pasture pictured above we really don't want to burn since it's about 200 acres and grazed down pretty thin. It'd be a pain to burn...

    Cedar tree removal

2013 vs 2021... it doesn't take long and they become a major problem. This is a big pasture of ours, so not a major focus for turkey/deer but same concept. This place is going to become useless if we don't manage it now. I'm going to start dropping them by hand this summer, it's steep...

    Cedar tree removal

I'm starting to join you all in this theory - I've planted cedars in the past and when they're in the middle age range they're find, but they quickly get too thick. Unfortunately it happens fast and over a huge area very quickly

    Our own worst enemies

Absolutely - there's few true mature or BIG buck hunters around. Most guys see a 150 driving down the road and it's a 180 when they go tell their buddies. Not that ones right and the other wrong. It's just a different type of hunting when you go after 5.5+ yr old deer or BIG bucks.

    Our own worst enemies

Oh ya, exact same thing happens in IA. Shoot it's happened to me and each person in my family. Quick decisions are generally made based on antlers and next thing you know you've got a 150's 3.5 or 4.5 laying dead infront of you. It happens. Some people do it accidentally and are bummed...

    .350 Legend

.350 has put the hammer on every deer my brother has shot, does and a mature buck all were down very quickly. I got one on the AR platform myself for next season.

    Barnes Spitfire MZ bullets

Never had one not expand with a polymer tip, on any bullet for that matter. Barnes or V-max. They've expanded on every one. Often times I find the blue tip inside the deer at some point

    Barnes Spitfire MZ bullets

I swear by Barnes with the blue tip, never shot the particular ones you've got. Some bloodtrails have been good, some not as much. I don't aim for the shoulder any more though. Two reasons, I've seen it not drop a deer which resulted in an unrecovered deer since no vitals were impacted. Deer...

Anyone else seeing more Varmints than usual?

Fur prices suck - not nearly as many trappers - way more critters around. Coons are so thick, going to still stack them up here to hopefully help lower the #s going into nesting season. Then there will be just as many around again by next fall. Mother Nature is great at filling any voids we...

Youth Hunter Tactics, goals, ideas, etc???

I personally would do whatever was exciting to my kid. Keep it exciting for them and the rest will come together over the years. If you press them to hunt or hold them to your own goals/standards, good chance you can take some excitement away from them. Let them define their own goals and how...

“Hunting shows” - net positive or negative?

Learned a TON from watching Drury videos growing up - used to look forward to buying all three of their new DVDs every year. That stopped about 15 years ago roughly. I just don't take the time to watch much for hunting videos any more. Rather go out and do it in person vs sit infront of a...

    tree tube posts/stakes

If the top folds over before the tree has grown out the top the tree will die. It has no room to grow up anymore. I've also seen the tops of the tubes folder over after the tree has already grown outside of the tube, above the top. They're pretty flimsy those first few weeks once they grow...

    tree tube posts/stakes

I've used bamboo, white oak, plastic and metal conduit, rebar, and T-post. T-post were my favorite. Rebar was second. Just don't go too short, the top of the rebar (IMO ) should be just under 6" from the top of the tube. Too tall and it'll rub on the new growth and could kill the tree once...
