There is a saying that I believe holds very true in Iowa. "90% of the deer are on 10% of the ground during the late season. Find yourself a piece of that 10% if you can and then hunt it very carefully.
The problem is that shotgun season is typically when a large amount of people who do not handle guns much and don't hunt often, pick up a weapon and head to the timber. This is not a bowhunter vs gun hunter issue. It is what it is and the tresspassing, unsafe firearms handling and other issues...
I haven't had luck with it during peak rut either, but around Thanksgiving I have. I have always wondered how many deer avoid my hunting area because of rattling. Maybe a doe that would drag a buck along.....hard to say though.
