Iowa Whitetailers, I need help!
I’ve completed a painting that among other things will be used for fund raising for Pheasants Forever. Thanks to a number of very helpful game farm folks I was able to get hundreds of flying pheasant shots as reference.
The problem is that I also need another...
Why join organizations that support hunting and conservation? Because when it is time to make waves numbers count.
The following is a bulletin sent out by SCI. It is an example of how membership in groups which support causes you belive in is important even if your involvement ends with...
Locust,
I've used a backpack sprayer with Garlon used as a basal spray at this time of the year to selectively kill undesirable shrubs, prickly ash etc. I have the kind you pump with one arm while carefully spraying with a wand in the other. As long as you can recognize everything without...
Forgot about that part of the question. To my knowledge they provide little benefit to wildlife while taking up water, nutrients and sunlight that could be used by more beneficial understory species and seedlings such as oak which need sunlight to survive. I have found that I can usually break...
This is a great discussion and many very good points have been made.
I've been doing tsi for about 15 years. I periodically go back to study the results. Every year I learn new things.
My goals are pretty similar to yours. I am aiming for a diversified habitat maximizing cover and food...
About the time I decided I liked MFR for it's cover potential the disease arrived and started killing it off. For some reason the disease kills MFR in the open faster than in the shade. I've found that tsi initially releases MFR but eventually starts killing it back.
Iowabruce is right on. Always check with your district forester, explain your goals, have him mark the timber and put out bids. I've seen a high bid that was 400% more than the low bid on the same trees. It doesn't cost you anything but time and could make a huge difference. It is also a...
Thanks guys. Great information. I am continually impressed with the knowledge base available on this web site. Now I just have to find the time to study all the information and the money to buy more toys!

OK, you guys have convinced me that I need still more equipment to put in food plots. What can you tell me about tillers? I've got a AGCO Allis 5670. I think it is 73 hp. What size tiller can I pull? Do I need to look at new equipment or is there good used stuff out there? Advice on brands...
Re: PMA Membership Thoughts
Onecam,
Please hurry up and start posting the story. I am anxious to hear how the hunt went!
For those of you who don't know us I'm the other guy that went on the hunt. Chris is so good at telling these stories that they are great even if you know ahead of...
I have a 7' brush hog that is great for maintaining trails in the woods and mowing lanes. The problem is when I mow my clover patches it tends to pile clipped material in the tire tracks and can smother strips of vegetation. With the 7' width I'm also laying down a lot of the stuff I'd like to...
I also have prickly ash in my timber. I usually get rid of it before doing tsi but the same technique should work either way. It is a rather soft wood so I just walk around with a spray or squirt bottle of Tordon RTU in one hand and snap the trunk with my other, then apply the tordon. It...
Thanks Ghost. That should help me explain to 'Young Doe' why Ive been going to the farm 1-4 days per week to work my but off from dawn to dusk for the last eight years.
It sure is fun watch the habitat develop!

"...the Federal Government announced plans to sell off more than 300,000 acres of public land, including many small deer hunting forests. The sale is part of the Bush Administration's 2007 fiscal budge, and an attempt to generate $1 billion over the next five years to make up for budget...
Iowabruce,
Thanks for the photos. They really help get across the idea. Do you have any photos of your tiller? I've been using pull behind for years and like you say it is a pain in small woodland plots.

I've had the same experience as Ghost. I used to girdle trees with mixed results. A double girdle through the cambium convinces almost all trees that you are serious. Sometimes it just takes awhile. A single girdle and Tordon RTU does the same.
Tordon is less effective when a lot of sap is...
