SSB 3050 Mowing highway right of ways

Forgive my ignorance, what nesting species could this have a harmful effect on?

    And so it begins......again

Completely agree that #1 reason, by far, that we have great buck age class is the absence of a rut gun season. I was speaking more about access. You can knock on doors and get access to areas with good age class. Good luck trying that in NR lease-heavy states like KS, IL, etc. It can be done...

    And so it begins......again

Iowa is a true gem for whitetail hunting, especially for residents. IMO the #1 reason for this is the small # of WT tags given to nonresidents. To my knowledge, we are unique among all states E of the Rockies in that nonresident landowners are required to draw a tag, and the only state E of the...

Law question- discharge of wounded deer after dark

If the animal can’t get up, make a slow approach, calmly grab an ear or antler tight in one hand, grasp a sturdy knife tightly in the other hand, and cut down the throat. I’ve done it a few times. The deer doesn’t panic until the knife pierces. Yes, you could get kicked, or stabbed by an antler...

    Shotgun hunting/ hunter harassment question.

What I’d do: -Don’t be out there during gun season. You’re just asking for a dangerous confrontation/incident -Screen the perimeter -Cameras to catch them entering the property. If they can’t see deer and can’t get deer to flee the property they’ll give up and move elsewhere.

    Advice after Bad Encounter

I called a buck out of his bed Monday, misjudged the distance and grazed the ribs, 370 yards blood trail and dried up. Same stand again today and he walks back to the same bed at 10:50 AM from chasing does and lays down to snooze. 53 yards from my stand and he still has no clue I’m there...

    Early lockdown?

Have not seen any mature bucks seeking or chasing in daylight yet, central IA. I’m excited about next weekend with cool temps. In 2013 I had a mature buck spend most of his time with one doe starting in late Oct. She was on track to be a couple days ahead of other does going into estrous, and...

    October cold front

Target-shooting, gear inventory, out for turkeys come Monday. I’ll start to bow hunt when it’s cold. Last year it snowed 4 times in Oct in central IA - like the opposite of this year!

    Broadheads for Elk?

Another vote for G5. It is all I use for whitetails and they zip right through - I’m only shooting 58 lbs. They also shoot just like a field point. My upcoming elk hunt is a rifle tag, but next year with any luck I’ll be doing an archery elk hunt, and will use my WT set up.

    2021 wrap up

Thanks so much for the info! I suspect our toughest fight in the next few years will be “crossgun creep”.

    Anyone seeing fewer turkeys?

I’ve been hunting turkeys on public in IA since 2011. In that time I’ve seen 2 total other turkey hunters afield. I’ve never had trouble finding turkeys - they have always seemed to be quite abundant. I have always seen what appears to be populations that have balanced age and sex classes. One...

    Shotgun Red Dot Sights

Another vote for the TRS-25. It’s what I use on my slug gun. The reflex-style sight has some advantages and disadvantages over the tube style red dot. https://guide.sportsmansguide.com/holographic-weapon-sights-vs-red-dots-how-theyre-different/
