    Wheat to beans...

[ QUOTE ] I have a relatively large, 5 to 6 acres, winter wheat field that was planted last August but is now back to growing actively again. Apart from the wheat the field is still relatively clear of weeds, at this point anyway. I want to plant RR beans there yet this spring. Should I...

    Spot not accessable by machinery.

[ QUOTE ] I have about a quarter acre of area down by a creek, I have been round-up,ing weeds out of last fall and this spring. I had frost seeded some clover on it some yrs ago. This late summer, what can I plant with few tools. Is there any alternative to the "No Till" bagged stuff? Or is that...

    Mineral site ?

I try to avoid starting a lick in a creek bottom with sandy soils ... I prefer to find more clay soils. Simply dump your mineral lick product on the ground along a good deer trail and let the deer do the rest.

    Prescribed Fire

Everyone thinks about burning grass this time of the year but it is also a good time to manage your timber with fire. The photos below are from one of our burns yesterday. Our burn objective was to promote forb growth, increase oak regeneration, and suppress invasive competition.

    Seed corn question

If you can't find someone to use it this year, I'd save it and plant at a little higher rate next year. Year old corn seed, if properly stored, does not lose germ rate as much as legumes will. I've planted three year old corn and sorghum with good results.

    Road kills

I'm curious what area the "DNR" has to manage that is 20,000 acres of pheasant habitat ? Good pheasant habitat does not stay that way without annual human disturbance. Habitat change can be just as devastating to bird populations as habitat conversion to crop ground. I would guess that the...

    Spraying/plowing/burning Question...

    1. I would stick with your original plan and wait for the burn ban to end. There seems to be a misconception with prescribed fire that once things green up you can't burn. If you have thick sod pasture there should be plenty of dead material to carry a fire throughout the summer well after...

    Killing MFR

A prescribed burn after it has completely leafed out will also kill or at least severely set it back without using herbicide. IMO multiflora rose is one of those non-native, invasives that is very beneficial to wildlife, and also very easy to control. I would hate to lose it as a managment tool.

    Tree Farmer Convicted:

I don't feel too much sympathy for him. In his catalog he sells a deer repellent that he guarantees will keep deer from eating your trees ... I'm not sure why he doesn't use the product he sells ...

    More questions on trees

[ QUOTE ] ... Shagbarks- I have girdled and hinged quite a few of these trees because they seem to create dense canopies that shade everything else out. Do you kill them all or just thin them out? They have no lumber value, correct? [/ QUOTE ] We have a friend that wants all the hickory...

    A little early

[ QUOTE ] Man, I just pulled two ticks off me. Them suckers are getting an early start this year. [/ QUOTE ] I bet the quail, pheasant, and turkeys are glad to see them out ... I hate it when I find a little grape growing where the sun don't shine about a month after turkey season ...

    Sort of TSI question

[ QUOTE ] If I stick to only girdling big shagbarks and tipping over smaller what I know not to be oaks and walnuts this weekend, can I go wrong with that? Should I gas up the chainsaw and go crazy or wait until next year? [/ QUOTE ] Well ... if you can't identify your trees I wouldn't...

    Which seed…

I am also one that questions the need for the seed mixes in the "fancy packages". I would guess they are probably a little better than less expensive Coop seed most farmers would buy, but how much better, 1%, 10%, 50% if you are on a budget and plant alot of acres I question if they are worth...

    Crown vetch?

[ QUOTE ] ... some are considering it an invasive. [/ QUOTE ] It does have a habit of taking over native prarie and choking everything else out. The Iowa DOT used to plant it along roadsides. It is pretty visible in many areas along our interstates and it is easy to see the impact on other...

    Des Moines Forage And Turf??

Small plots, on timber soils, with a high deer population ... that's a tough but common situation. I would suggest clover or perhaps winter wheat/rye/AWP, but likely both will get hammered in the scenerio you describe. Until you get your numbers down, I would focus on managing your natural...
