1 deer hunter looking for a place to shotgun hunt

Yeah Skip that is shotgun season around here, and late mloader. Actually though it was worse 15-20 years ago when the locals ran in much larger groups and had the whole county to push. Now farms have been busted up into a lot of smaller pieces, with many being managed for deer hunting.

    Best trail cameras of 2017 - $100-225

I really like the Moultrees for that price range Skip. Very good IR pics and all of mine are on their 4th and 5th year. I also really like my Muddy cam's daytime video quality.

Is anyone putting in any water holes this year? How are you going to go about it?

My hills are pretty dry so I make lots of waterholes, lined in 6 ml plastic from Bomgaars. I get the 20'x100' rolls. You have to dig them extra deep so that you can put 6"-8" of dirt back over the plastic, gorilla tape the seams. The hardest part is shoveling the dirt back in evenly. I go...

    Milo and Pea combo plot

I use it more for cover next to my clover and along routes I walk, in and out of my blinds. Welters used to use a real tall milo, which I liked better, but now a shorter variety. I also add in peas and sunflower, and let it grow into a tall weedy mess. Kinda like WI's Powerplant mix. In...

    Milo and Pea combo plot

I have been using a soybean and milo mix that I get from Welters, for years. You do not want to plant the milo until the ground temps reach 65 degrees

    youth season questions

How would you declare the season you want? My understanding is that if they do not fill during youth they can then hunt, early mloader, following those rules, then hunt the shotgun seasons, but the part about choosing one of the seasons does need some clarification. Then they can hunt the late...

    Mineral Site ?

You will still be in violation if you don't dig out the dirt and replace it with new dirt. I dig them out with my loader, replace the dirt, then seed it with clover and winter rye.

    Iowa Whitetail App

Nice post Tony, you started a great thing. I have friends that I talk to almost daily, certain times of the year, that I would have never met, without this site. The info shared over the years has been priceless

    Corn for cover

I do the same thing but with a disc, then broadcast a tall milo and tall forage soybean mix I buy from Welter seed. I dont spray it, just let it go, deer love it....way better than a field of brome grass. Deer do love most weeds too

    Is your area dry??

Very dry in my part of Monona county. Nice rain all around but just did not hit here. A friend of mine in Wyoming always says, "we are always only 2 weeks away from a drought, this time of the year"
