That’s crazy!!! Cherry on plum?!?!? That’s amazing it worked!! Always wondered if someone could go a step further & see if some fruits could be grafted on some vigorous trees in a guys area. Imagine if u could graft fruit on like a locust tree :).
NOW!!!! I’d probably add oats.
Can seed it anyway that works for you. Just don’t get it too deep & make sure to get all fertility right. I’ll put “ideal” below but doesn’t mean there isn’t a million ways & tools to use to get it done…
IDEAL IF YOU DOING ALFALFA: kill, disc (yes, I said...
I’m sure there’s some variance. They have All sorts of ratings on lime on “how much PH it can adjust per ton” as well as how fast it breaks down. Another is some of the other stuff that gets into lime like magnesium, etc.
bottom line, even the worst pelletized lime is still pretty good...
Smokes it!!!!!! No contest!!!!!! Same with WI. Same with even pa!!!! IN, OH, KY, MO, IL, etc - it’s not even close!!!! I remember as a kid dudes would be like “I’m going to MN to hunt. They have like 120-130” deer, some are even bigger!!!!!” I wanted to go so bad cause that sounded GREAT!!!!
Yep!! All this above is SPOT ON!!! “But we have more people & smaller tracts!!!” Why are there mature bucks all over next to Des Moines or any populated area in iowa then? Tons of people & hunters & small tracts!!! Or- then why do u have 2 bucks per person?!?!?! 14 days on a calendar &...
I’d separate em to be honest. Like- do half the area in clovers alone & half in alfalfa alone.
I’ve done a mix but doesn’t do as well … drop alfalfa to maybe 5 lbs. run 5 red, 3-4 alice white. Could add some crimson, berseem, balansa, etc.
Agree 1000%. Most folks r way better off renting land out. If u dont love doing the stuff & dont go all in- rent it. Or able to handle losses, weather, huge repair costs & risk.
Only reason I do it is I can do as much or little as I want as each year changes so much. And…. I’m unemployed...
Anytime anyone wants to go “how do we ruin our hunting??!?!?!?” Just do what MI does. It’s a dead horse I’ll never stop beating. It’s my hunting version of PTSD as I grew up there & had years of my life seeing a ruined broken system that caused most the other kids to quit. It’s still...
“Turkey hunting >>>> deer hunting”
I hear this all the time & my standing offer to EVERYONE that says it has still never been met!!!!….. I will trade anyone their biggest buck or bucks for all the biggest best turkeys on my farm !!!! :) ;). I have still never had anyone take me up on...
If you want tonnage for horses - add Timothy. It will do 0 for deer though & take away from the overall nutrition of the plot for deer. Not a big deal though. Timothy is best companion grass to add tonnage for baling IMO. Another way to add tonnage/nutrition/attraction to plot is to drill...
For sure. Just close the trench or opening all the way. Which is a must no matter what. But - the only risk with simazine is it flowing into the root system. Non issue if close row or hole.
U probably wanna watch for grasses…. Metolachlor or imazapic (plateau) good options Can do it...
Guys are like “wait- u don’t turkey hunt but you pheasant hunt?!???” I frigin love it!!!!!! Turkey hunting is always in planting & farm season so I just get overloaded & never did it. Pheasant is so great. I’m sure I’d be a turkey junky if I did it. I’ll live through you guys on the...
Would actually like some rain. No excuse for crops not going in btw!! Ideal to get em in!!!! But as nice as dry weather for planting is, send some rain please! 1-2” of slow long rains per week if I can make specific requests. :)
I do fenced plots where it’s literally my only option. Folks who been around me know how much I hate the fence & putting them up. I am stuck with some on some CRP farms that limit size. I always have clovers next to them outside fence or plant some beans for them to mow.
Totally agree with...
I’d get it going now for sure. U could run brassicas later or do the rye mix too. If u did the rye mix- that’s where you would add clovers. Brassicas would be only brassicas. But ya, 100% I’d get it rocking asap. Deer love the crimson & need that nutrition.
That’s actually really good soil. Probably had either corn or maybe hay cut off it where depleted Phosphorus but that’s easy fix…. Be obvious one to get a good bit on if haven’t.
One field needs K. The rest…. PH isn’t bad & your Organic matter is good. Could run some gypsum for sulfur &...
