    AMS Help

AMS takes 10 minutes+ to fully dissolve. You MUST have most of your water in there, say 60-70% full before mixing. Another way is to dilute in bucket so it dissolves & then add. I have heard issues with ams & enlist. If you guys want alternative that’s “almost as good” (IMO) - look at...

    What corn and bean seed?

I have some free gmo corn if anyone needs some. S of Des Moines or Urbandale. RR. Corn, IMO is far less fussy than beans. I have never seen a corn variety deer didn’t pound. On beans….. if someone wanted to “buy locally” as they had a fairly clever salesman …. Ask for a LARGE bean. Longer...

Cover Crop website - FIXING SOIL & SOIL LOSS

Yep!!!! See it all the time where the tree row is taller than the fields on all sides. Wondered same thing. Kinda looks like this (yes- this is 1st grade drawing skills)…. Wind catching some. That’s a good idea. Another 2 things I wonder…. 1) working the soil breaks the soil structure …...

Cover Crop website - FIXING SOIL & SOIL LOSS

ANYONE ON HERE…. Go to a fence row that’s avoided the plow/tillage & herbicide for DECADES…. They are still everywhere in most deer/ag areas…. Take a shovel & scoop out a load Feel the “tilth” of how easy shovel goes in and how soft/mellow the ground is. Look at how dark, crumbly & structured...

Cover Crop website - FIXING SOIL & SOIL LOSS

Taking a break from planting piles of CRP right now. Going over some junk soil that has been abused from before the time I was born. I was looking at some “junk land” I have been doing 10+ years of cover crops & diverse blends…. Soil looks completely different & what grows there is totally...

Things that make me go Hmmmmm....Land Prices

I promise… this ALMOST Exact mindset of “ground too high, doesn’t pencil out” was to this same degree & difficulty 25 years ago. I bought an 80 with half ROUGH tillable for $115k then. The best I could get for rent was “I’ll plant your food plot if I can farm it for FREE”. Corn was like...

Converting invasives to natives, worth the squeeze?

MFR doesnt concern me near as bad as bush honeysuckle. So if you don’t have that - very good news. Heck, I like Autum olive better than BHS. If it were mine…. I’d go in and spray the bases of the multiflora rose … I think last time I did that I used diesel or an oil & garlon. Read label...

Converting invasives to natives, worth the squeeze?

How many acres u dealing with? I got a vail saw that sprays herbicide after the cut. I can get around without messing trees up and that’s over the top for what folks pry need. Chainsaw & backpack sprayer also works. Or even foliar spray. Like how many acres and how many invasives would u...

Converting invasives to natives, worth the squeeze?

I don’t disagree one bit that all the invasives create thickets. & deer like “thick stuff”. For sure & everyone on here has pry seen invasives that create nasty thick areas. Heck- even natives like cedars or less desirable things like prickly ash. Million forms of “thick stuff” - native &...

Things that make me go Hmmmmm....Land Prices

Curious on this as well. masters degree & dual bachelors degree &….. fired myself 10+ year ago. So my salary is $0!!!! & for degrees in business & engineering…. Farming, manual labor & spending all day on a farm …. I think I use close to 0 from what I got in college?!??!?! Anytime anyone...

    Double cropping Brassicas

Heavy. Could do 25-ish. Could do less & probably be fine too though or do some oats, etc. Good part- crimson seed is very cheap and u still way ahead with no nitrogen cost. It’s way better for the soil & feeding the deer so even if a guy started comparing figures & splitting hairs- benefits...

Converting invasives to natives, worth the squeeze?

Bush honeysuckle- man- hearing great things on aerial treatment. For how bad it is & how it’s done - very little downside & massive benefits for low cost. The timing of BHS staying green after all else is dormant is so huge an opportunity. Converting invasive to other better stuff...

    The Talk

I was that dude when I was a kid. 14-16 years old. Only saw about 5 bucks a year & was a big deal if got one. All were 1.5’s. Once I shot a handful & realized places existed with older bucks…. Quickly changed. The guys back home in those areas- seems like the older crowd still does it to...

    Mulching jobs

Man- that’s really low cost!!! I’d also say this on other side of it…. Running a high end disc with crazy flow- u running around a $150k+ unit @ new prices… if a guy got hired out to use that, it would be crazy to do it for under about $300 an hour. So- $100/hour for a drum…. That makes...

    Mulching jobs

What’s goal of the job? Disc wins in 90% of scenarios IMO. Throws bigger chunks all over is maybe a downside but u can back drag them to grind up. Drum is smaller chips but it also makes that area full of mulch so things don’t grow. Drum speed vs disc speed is a huge difference, like I...

    Mulching jobs

One thing to keep in mind…. A drum mulcher runs about 3x slower than a disc. So- if hire out drum… should cost less. In theory at least. I’ve ran a lot of machines with best drums (tuned to machine with new teeth) vs discs and im Probably closer to 4x faster with a disc mulcher. $130/hour...

The #1 Battle & issue we fight for in Iowa….

I’ve had this discussion with folks from the everyday hunter, legislators, casual hunters, non-profit orgs, DNR, SERIOUS Hunters, etc. Along with posts on this site. I wanted to put a fine point on explaining this & have the dialogue. Our #1 issue above all others is fighting for a rebound...
