So some responses we received they mentioned that outfitters are registered with the department of natural resources? I thought I read in an earlier post that outfitters aren’t required to register or recognized by the state? Anyone wanna clear that up? Also for the non-resident landowners who...
Emails sent! I have friends who like to come hunt from out of state and they are already having to wait 4 and now 5 yrs to draw a bow tag. Taking 500 more tags away from the existing pool is ludicrous. All the outfitters I know care little about conservation, herd management, and are only in it...
One of the most interesting things I learned at the QDMA deer steward course was that regardless of a buck being locked down with a doe he always returned to his core area at least once a day.
I will attach my tree strap to my harness while still attached to the lifeline and then unhook from the lifeline. Same thing when descending. This way I am always attached to the tree.
Has anyone tried putting a few mothballs in each tube in fall to keep mice out of the tubes in the winter? Was thinking of trying this out because I had a bunch of trees girdled this year. I've also gone to using 5/8" rebar for my tube stakes. The bamboo were horrible(lesson learned) and the oak...
I did a direct seeding this spring after we were unable to get them seeded in the fall due to late harvest and early freeze. I'm a bit skeptical on how it will turn out so time will tell. The contractor I hired has done lots of direct seedings and he told me not to worry about herbicides unless...
Yup those bucks should be back about now. The buck I was after showed back up last night in a bachelor group and stepped out at 10 yards. Lucky for him he had gotten all busted up on his vacation. He actually looked right at me as to say maybe next year and proceded to munch on my radishes for...
Thanks guys I really appreciate your help. I will definately keep an eye on them. Hopefully I'll have a tractor next year so I can get them planted on time.
Pulled a few tonight and the best I saw was the radishes and they were maybe 4 inches. Looked like small carrots. Is this normal to have the tops grow out first and then the bulbs develop? I just can't figure out why the tops are so big and there isn't much underneath. Luckily there isn't a...
This was my first year planting turnips. I got them in the ground around the first week of august here in west centratl iowa. Planted and fertilized as discussed on here and also gave them a shot of nitrogen right before a big rain a few weeks back. Everything looks great and the plants are over...
Funny this topic came up. I was just thinking today, that as much as everyone is clearing all the trees they can to plant more corn, there should be an even better incentive to leave some timber. So much for that thought I guess. Its a shame how greedy everyone is today and nobody thinks much...
Yup I was up in Ottertail for that course. Beautiful country up there. Learned a great deal that weekend. You should definately try and go to one next year. Hopefully they'll be one nearby.
I attended the QDMA land stewardship course in Minnesota back in march and according to those bioligists (Kip Adams, Joe Hamilton, etc.) there is no scientific evidence that a moon phase effects anything to do with the rut or feeding patterns. But then go and read stuff by charles alsheimer of...
I wouldn't worry about it. The does will usually take over the best fawning areas during the summer and keep the bucks away. I've noticed this at my place as well. I have mineral sites 500 yds apart and the one site I get tons of buck pics and the other one is all does and fawns. Keep the...
Yup I ordered some cranberry and some hickorys from them last year. They were packaged very well and arrived right on time. The hickorys were actually quite a bit larger than I expected and had to use an auger to get them in the ground.
Yes I'm in west central Iowa. Plenty of deer out here. So far they've only browsed a few of the pines before I could get going on getting some tubes and deterent on them so guess I'll wait and see. Have already tubed most of the oaks, walnuts, and hickorys and even caged some of the smaller...
I wound up getting some white pine and spruce in place of the red cedar I ordered from the state nursery that were no good this year. Most of them went towards road screening and I've used the rigid tubes on most of them along with trying that deer guard spray from plantra. Hopefully some make...
I'm in the same situation. Had ordered 1400 of them and was told that they wouldn't feel right sending them. Wound up replacing them with some white spruce and gonna try some white pines as well even though I was told the deer will probably eat them all. So bwese are you under the impression...
