    scents and lures

I can attest positively with this morning's slow hunt that left over estrus urine by Hunters' Specialties is a cover scent and nothing more. Sat this morning till 9AM. 1 small 6 at 8AM crossed my path, followed it the wrong way for 10', then veered off into fresh combined corn and ate for 10...

    Who's oldest?

I agree with JakeWym. What are you feeding them? I've seen a lot of cattle on full grain that didn't look like that!

    Well said Scoffin!

    wide ten hard horn

Wow. Really gotta love the wide ones when there's some height and mass too.

    Made It Happen

I agree with the others. The mass is far better than I thought in the trail cam photos you posted. Great deer!

Take him out of the gene pool?

Wisconsin is studying deer dispersal ranges and movements right now. I concur with the post that says culling will likely not produce any significant change. 1 deer in their study so far relocated 15 miles. That's not to say you shouldn't shoot one you think is less than desirable. I agree with...

Crazy Story on My Wisconsin ML Buck

Very cool story, unique to say the least. I don't think you can get more satisfied knowing that you harvested an animal that probably wouldn't have made it through the winter anyways. Congrats!

    Movement update...

Sunday morning I had chasing in the morning sit. 2 bucks running 2 does all over an 80 acre patch of timber. Came past me too early to tell what they were. By good light, everything had quieted down. Saw one little basket cruising in the evening. I think they are still rutting, but the hunting...

    Hero Shot for a buddy

Awesome buck. Our opener here in Wisconsin is this weekend. I can't wait!

Surprised or not, that is pretty cool.

    Lansing Wildlife Management Area

I wouldn't be afraid of poor hunting. Like was said, Allamkee county ranks right up there. I am just across the river, and have seen pics of 2 deer within a 20 mile radius flirting with 200". The hills are tough to hunt, but like anything else, I'm sure it just takes practice.

    How Sad

I agree with pretty much everything said here so far. What a joke that a man has to give his life to protect our natural resources. Shows you just how manly the suspect really is too, not even man enough to accept the consequences of his actions, which likely would have been pretty minimal in...

Not the way you want to harvest a deer!

This apparently happened within 10 miles of my house, but this is the first I've heard about it. You guys gotta remember, SW Wisconsin is not Iowa. Big deer to us is next year's shooter to you guys. :) 2 other comments, I'll bet it does weigh 300 pounds. The guy in pic weighs 200 or so, and...

    Movement update...

I had the last 4 days to hunt. Saturday I saw just one lone doe. My brother had a fun morning, but all baskets, no shooters. Sunday I didn't hunt because the wife was working. Monday was warm. Saw nothing in the AM sit. Went to do some errands around 10 and saw a nice 10 point hounding a doe...

    Today's 10 Point

Awesome Great deer and great job on the story. Reading posts like this make me anxious for my upcoming time in the woods.

    How big?

For sure 40 isn't enough to claim sole responsibility for raising and manage an animal to maturity without having him step off the property, so I guess I may have misread the question. If the goal is to keep deer on "your property" 100% of the time, I think even 640 might be the minimum. But...

Ridgetop hunting question....what's the right wind?

That is exactly what I've been trying to do, thinking either the deer will move along the trail below me and be too far below me to wind me, or they will come out in the field and I'm downwind. The stand is actually down off the ridge top/field edge slightly, to gain proximity to the trail that...

Ridgetop hunting question....what's the right wind?

Wow, I can see I'm not the only one asking this question, and the opinions differ widely. It's interesting, but the one consensus seems to be that if you think you're high enough, you're not. I guess the best strategy is to get as high as you can without compromising shooting lanes, and try to...

Ridgetop hunting question....what's the right wind?

We have a ridgetop stand that sits like this, imagine a north/south woodline, with ridgetop field on the west side, and wooded hillside on the east side. We have a stand on the woodline, a few yards in, expecting the deer to run north and south along the field edge. My question is, if hunting...

    How big?

I'd go along and say 640 acres, which is a square mile, if it were in a square shape. That said, I'd rather have 40 acres of well managed land to hunt than 640 that had no improvements. Unless your neighbors are doing what you are doing, 40 acres is enough to pull deer from all of the neighbors...
