My buddy has a busted up collarbone too (from a bike fall too). It sticks up so much his grandkids call it "Pa's parrot" lol. Get well soon

    I fell…..

Get well soon. Just curious how old you are, and did you ever think it couldn't happen to you? Was it equipment failure, or just slipped? Do you use a harness on the regular? ....I actually do not like using a harness, but I'm older now and wonder if I should.

    Irony of 2 deer…..

What amazes me, is that this happens every single year, and people are still amazed by it!

Thoughts on when this youngster was born?

That's what I thought too, ruffed up hair, and probably shedding.

Thoughts on when this youngster was born?

There could be lots of other factors on why this deer is small other than when it was born. I seriously doubt a doe was bred in april.... Did it get the nutrients it needed at the time it needed? Did it's mother get killed before it was fully weined? Bad genetics? Litters of pigs always have...

New Turkey hunter- what to get?

You don't have to be a good caller if you know where the turkeys want to be. Diaphram calls take a while to learn, I'd say a box call is easiest. I think the diaphram is the best sounding, but a box should work. A slate call isn't that hard to learn either, and sounds realistic and nice. If...

    HSB 609 Hunting turkey with a .410

For an older gent, who knows the guns limits, and when to and when not to shoot, it might be OK. For a young hunter, they don't have that experience, and the .410 is too weak... gonna be a lot of toms walking around with green meat..

    Out of US hunts

Never leaving USA soil. At least I hunted Saskatchewan 3 times when times were better. There's too much in the USA that I haven't seen yet.

    Cedar tree removal

I know in NY here, hemlock greens will burn so hard it will scare you. Pile them in a dense pile. It might take a little but once they go, look out.

    Cedar tree removal

You have to pile them up. Can't just light a grove of them . The oils in the greens catch and burn like fuel.

    Cedar tree removal

I don't know from experience, but a rancher told me they burn better green than dried out.

How far will a mature buck travel?

The furthest one I know about is about 20 miles. The buck was on camera and then shot a few days later 20 miles away. That was in Saskatchewan, near Keeley Lake. He went all that way in 2 or 3 days in the rut.

    Land Prices Out of Control

Looks like it really tookoff after people started using the internet.

    6 To 7% Timber

I also read this while searching the history of trees and deer in Iowa: Reestablishment of deer into the state can be traced to escapes and releases from captive herds, and translocation and natural immigration from deer herds in surrounding states. A conservative estimate of the population in...

    6 To 7% Timber

Iowa should be a model. But politicians can't see that trophy deer can actually bring in revenue. And not by selling more tags, and opening more seasons. My state will never change. Massachusetts has the closest thing to a decent system, mainly shotgun opens in Dec.

    6 To 7% Timber

I did wind up reading that most of the total wooded land in Iowa is privately owned. So non res hunters hunting public land in trees are packed in the few wooded areas. The great hunting can be gone quick if bad choices are made. Even a small thing like raising the amount of non res tags by a...

    6 To 7% Timber

I realize trees were cleared for farming.....then the government pays people to not farm...? Just trying to learn how Iowa got to where it is today, it's interesting

    6 To 7% Timber

I'm learning a bit about Iowas history, trying to answer my own questions. I found out Iowa was first settled in 1833, indians were mostly booted out. It seems the eastern side of iowa was where the trees were, and towards the west was grassland with few trees. Farmers had a boom and bust around...

    6 To 7% Timber

I hear Skip say this all the time. Historically, was Iowa always 6 to 7% timber? Seems to me the land price increases are due to hunting , not farming. Is that true, or am I wrong on that? Why is there no initiative to make more timbered land?
