Clearcutting is ugly, unsightly and hard to look at. Then, after a year or two it becomes some of the best "natural" habitat you can ever create for several different types of wildlife.
I'd imagine that many of you who have been fortunate to call Iowa home for much of your lives may not be as...
Good luck!!! I'm in Michigan so don't have much advice for you since I don't know your seasons. This is my first year hunting turkeys as well, my season is April 28 through May 4th. Excited to give it a try and see if I can't stumble my way into some fun.
The group that hunt's coyotes with dogs around us has killed 40+ coyotes in our area this winter. That's a lot of saved fawns (and adult deer after this winter we just had) for the inconvenience of having some dogs blister across our property a few times this winter. While I would be quite...
Like Deersniffer said, you could go right to the dog from the first drop of blood if you wanted to or you could start yourself and then once blood is lost call in the dog. The thing you want to avoid is duplicated effort between people and the dog. By that I mean you ideally want the dog to...
That is correct, the recommendation from the guys I posted earlier is to back out as soon as you lose the trail for best results from the dog. Any grid searching, wandering, etc can have a negative effect on the dogs ability to track the deer.
Another issue is that a good dog will track the...
If the certification comments are in reference to my post about Michigan requiring the use of a state certified tracker I believe the certification is more about the person handling the dog as it is the dog itself. You are correct in the idea that just about any dog can out track a human based...
Here in Michigan it is legal to use a dog to track your deer once it has been shot. Not legal to use dogs to run/hunt deer. The stipulations that I know of (and I'm sure there may be more that I don't know of) are that in order for the hunter to carry a weapon during the tracking the dog...
It's a great thing that you're doing Gladiator, this is the type of thing that could have a bigger impact on his life than you'll ever know. Even if he never hunts again you will have made a positive impact in his life.
I can't help you with a hunting spot but I wish you the best in your...
Kind of surprised nobody has said NAP Spitfires yet. I've been shooting them since either 98 or 99 and have never had one fail to perform like it should. They've always opened (judged by the enterance and exit wounds during processing) and I can only think of a few times I didn't get a clean...
That's awesome!! Should be a mandatory watch once a season when you start thinking of "the grind". You've got to remember that it was that same excitement that got you and I hooked on hunting back when we first started too. Way too easy to forget.
Awesome buck and awesome story!!!
I got to do the same thing this year with my 3.5yr old son. I was up at the property and phoned my wife to tell her. A few minutes later I was getting texts and calls from her because my son was freaking out wanting to know about daddy's big buck. He had...
I'd say it's the same buck. In the 2011 pic his right side lays out a bit, just as it does in the 2013 picture. His right side was also a bit better than his left in 2011 and it appears to be the same in 2013.
Looks like my view when my wife says "just do whatever you want" and I forget that that saying doesn't really mean that at all. A few more hooves to the skull and he'll start to put two and two together :)
I agree! I'm a Michigan guy and while we have more big bucks that we get credit for it isn't anything like what people post up here on a weekly basis. Love coming here to day dream (or get frustrated depending on my mood).
Very cool background story
Just to play devils advocate in the whole "culling in a free ranging population" debate, that deer has now been out there passing on his 'sub-par' genetics for 10 years. Have you noticed any trickle down effect in the local deer herd? Have you seen any other bucks...
Wow, that's something else.
I'm not sure what's more impressive; what he will be when he's done growing or what he already is at 13 June. Good grief he's ahead of the curve!!
