    Deer movement update thread

Got in the stand around 10:30, no movement at all yet besides bumping a doe getting into the stand. I realize I got out here late but was hoping to see something? East central. Too warm?

Digging up some Concordia Oaks tomorrow!!

MDC Nursery sells them in the Spring, I bought some the past 2 years. If they are not listed online, call and ask and they usually have them.

    Acorns to Oaks!

Nice looking greenhouse! Where did you get all of your tray supplies? I've been looking online, and I never knew (cheap) black plastic could be so expensive!

    Screening trees

6-8' might be a little difficult to find. Kelly Tree Farm sells potted 2-3'. You may want to try to find some nearby to transplant (road ditches, fence rows). The largest I've transplanted was around 5 foot (by hand) but it is a lot of work and I needed to support the main trunk once I got it...

    Frost:

Hey Daver, how do you make your fire breaks? Is a strip 8 foot wide, lightly disked, enough?

    Persimmons

I bought some from Red Fern Farm outside Wapello and planted them in July. Not the optimal time but they were doing well at the end of fall? I guess we'll see this Spring....

Thanks Goatman! I'll try to get them in the ground with plenty of water.

    Acorns to Oaks!

I should have added that I'm not setup for potting them and I'm wondering if I can leave them in the fridge for fear of frost if they happen to pop out of the ground in a couple weeks?

    Acorns to Oaks!

Ok dumb question, but I'm just trying this for the first time. I've got white oak acorns in the fridge from early Sept., the roots are just starting to pop out. What do I do? Can they go in the ground this late in the year if I water them well? I'll also use partial tubes to keep critters out.

    Tree stand in a Birch?

I'm extremely frustrated with getting winded in a current stand, the way the wind swirls due to being on a ridge and having an opening in the woods downhill seems to get me in trouble no matter which way the wind is. Has anyone used River Birch to put a stand in? It is a healthy tree but the...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Thanks Skip! I got 2 plots in today with the fourwheeler (each about .2 acres) and 2 small ones by rake. One more small one this weekend and I'm done, now praying for this next storm front on Tuesday. I'd attach pics but it won't let me download from my phone. Everybody drink plenty of water...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

I was just a little scared after reviewing the new Welter's site, the 4010 peas are the only type that says "Inoculant recommended"! I suppose, I'm not out that much if they don't all germinate with all of the other varieties in the mix?

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Thanks! I'll be discing, broadcasting the big grains/ peas and then cultipacking followed by broadcasting the other smaller seeds. Then finishing with a final cultipacker pass? Hoping to catch the rain on Tues/Wed 60% chance.

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

So I bought the 4010 peas from Welters and just noticed that they need inoculant. Do I really need it or can I just broadcast a few more lbs in the mix? Planning on planting Friday!

    Clover

That looks way better than my clover! I clipped ours at 6-8 inches for fear of the heat coming, but still need to spray for broadleaf plants as you can see! It was mess (right side was being cut when the picture was taken) but there is still a lot of clover in there.

    Friday Carnage

Great looking plot! That looks 10 times better than my ATV disc'd, humped up, irrigation ditch lookin' mess that I made, complete with grass that wasn't sprayed because my sprayer quit working on me. Man this stuff is fun!

    Brassicas

Speaking of that, is it a waste to go back and broadcast emerged brassicas with slow release urea to help give a nitrogen boost?
