    Tree Planting

Thanks Jordan, I got them in really early and with all the moisture we've had, they were doing really well. In the picture I attached, the leaves look a lot more brown than they actually are, so I'm hoping they'll survive. Has anyone tried Sevin? Either powder or spray? I have some powder on...

    Tree Planting

Planted trees this Spring and have just found quite a few oaks are almost completely eaten by Japanese Beatles. Will they sprout new growth after the Beatles are gone?

    Tree Planting

I'm beat! Got 95 in the ground today, almost 50 nine bark, 25 black chokeberry, the rest were persimmons, Concordia oaks, and cherry bark oaks. Anybody had any luck with cherrybark or swamp chesnut in Iowa? I only got 10 of each, I'm pretty sure the cherrybark are not even meant for N...

    Tree Planting

I completely agree, the small ones, shake off, especially if it is going to be a while before you plant and you need to soak in water. I've had good luck transplanting large 4-5 footers but I try to keep a 3 foot diameter of the surface roots intact and then lift those up to get the basketball...

    Fertilizer sources in central iowa

I got mine from the Atalissa location and I forgot to mention it was BYO Buckets. There are quite a few locations and there is one in Urbandale, just try calling ahead and ask if they will sell you bucket quantities. My biggest plot is only 1 acre so I don't need to justify much more than 4-5...

    Tree Planting

Relocated 30 yesterday afternoon and this morning, excited to start my sight/ wind block and help the deer feel more secure in this wide open fence row! Pretty sandy so the native grass mix is pretty sparse.

Those are some gnarly looking areas, thanks for sharing the pictures! I like seeing what other people are doing for changes to their property. It keeps me motivated!

    Fertilizer sources in central iowa

I bought 5 gal. pails of potash and phosphorus (the phosphorus has quite a bit of urea with it as well) for $20 per pail from Crop Production Services. Each pail is around 40 + lbs. when full. The last time I purchased potash in a 40 lb. bag it cost me $1/lb. They also had slow release urea but...

    Clover

Why not crimson? Doesn't do as well when frost seeding? Thanks!

    Clover

Ok, so I screwed up and frost seeded a couple lbs of Red clover into my old white clover plot instead of Crimson, (grabbed the wrong bag.). The red was not pre-inoculated. Is this a complete waste or will the seed still germinate?

    Clover

I haven't done much in the past 4 years besides mowing, so I figured I could build it up for a changeover this fall unless the whites are still looking really good, then I might see if I can get another good year. Thanks for the reply!

    Clover

Hey Skip, how much Potash do you add annually? You mentioned previously adding it in the fall so it can break down. I found Paul mentioned 200 lbs of 6-24-24 for maintenance, so should I add 40 lbs of 0-0-60 to a 1/2 acre to get the same amount of K?

    Clover

For you guys that are frost seeding into existing clover plots.... How much 0-0-60 potash do you add and how often? I'm trying to extend my 4 year white clover plot by adding some red for this next season. Unless of course the white does well this year! Do you apply an annual amount of...

CRP type programs with Short Crop History?!?!

I just got approved to plant trees and shrubs, up to 10 percent of my CP-33 because I planted it in 2011 and it was allowed back then. Just talk to your NRCS rep to update your plan. If you are wanting cost share they will have to get approval from the FSA rather than just updating your plan.

    Timber Stand Improvment

Goatman and Sligh are dead on with where to start. Give a call to the State Forester in your District and spend part of a day with him walking your woods. Part of their job is to spend time on private land helping to improve timber stands. They are allowed to spend up to 5 days a year with...

    Tree Planting

tree pruning Can somebody give me some positives/negatives on pruning trees this spring after being in tubes for one full year? They were planted last spring and are White and Northern Reds in 4, 5, and 6ft Plantra tubes. Do you lift the tube and prune it down to a central leader or wait for...

    Local source for trees

I'm buying some persimmons from Red Fern Farm in Wapello, IA for Spring planting.

Whoa. This is insane (from the stand)

I completely agree with everything you're saying, my only issue is that they are not able to shoot deer on their property. It is strictly setup to shoot deer on my side, which is illegal, if they don't have permission.

Whoa. This is insane (from the stand)

. I'll have to take a picture, they did not cut anything on my side just trimmed the branches to get the stand up, if they are bow hunting it would be impossible to shoot a deer on their side unless they shoot the deer as it is about to jump onto my side. Again, I'm not saying the deer are...
