Things that make me go Hmmmmm....Land Prices

Unless you are a day trader, IRA and land should be viewed as long term investments. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Poached buck

Sounds like the case is still open. Since it was shot early August in Iowa, guessing a resident. Click on the link.

    Question on Turkey numbers….

I think we had distemper come through the raccoon population. Not seeing much sign and found a few dead while shed hunting. I can only hope that this is true. Decent turkey numbers on one property I hunt, picked up a couple of spring archery tags yesterday.

    Early spring?

My guess is the lack of a brutal winter. When we did have a cold snap, there was snow on the ground insulating it from the frigid temps. Not a fan of -20F below but might trade it for ticks.

Late gun season vs Early Gun seasons +/-‘s

Jace Elliot from the Iowa DNR gave a talk at Ankeny before the IBA Spring Banquet. He showed a map of the state and the adjustments they are going to make in issuing antlerless tags. I was rather miffed to see that they are going to increase the number of antlerless tags for Johnson County. I...

    The Talk

The MIL's father/farmer (RIP) raised a big family during the depression. One of his favorite stories was when he killed three geese in one shot as they sat on the pond, maximized the return on the cost of the shell. Had a family to feed. He didn't care for my wide ranging GSP, his was trained...

    Beans and…..

I think it would be interesting to cross hatch plant corn on beans. It would take twice the time to plant as you would need to do two passes, but the hatch pattern would somewhat prevent the deer from walking down the rows (might slow them down on wiping out the plot). Maybe lower the plant...

    Early spring?

Went for a walk in the timber this afternoon and came home with a wee tick crawling on my hand. Need to treat my turkey hunting clothes.

    Early spring?

This morning I noticed asparagus is poking through. Couple weeks to a month earlier than normal. Usually use asparagus as an omen of morels, but I don’t know this year. Not even turkey season yet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Late gun season vs Early Gun seasons +/-‘s

Going to ban scopes on AR platform 450 Bushmasters that are legal during gun season one and two, also? Most people have no business shooting 200 yards or beyond, no matter the season/gun. I’d like to see success statistics for 500-600 yards shots, bet it is very low. Just because one “can shoot...

Maybe test out the insert link function. It acted squirrelly for me a minute a go. Showed a black box where the text should be, but clicked off that in the compose window and it showed it.

Need ideas to fix this EHD pond

We have a pond like that. Was good until the muskrats moved in, hasn't held water since. We tried a treatment of Soilfloc and that didn't fix the problem. Next fix would be getting it cleaned out and bentonite clay lined.

    Transplants

Not that I have experienced. Usually, ERC has low branches that prevent it. Occasional tree might get hit, but more of the exception from what I've seen. Along those lines, the swamp white oaks we put in had many low branches as well and I think that greatly contributed to the success of them...
