    Regs Dialogue with MDC Director

Agree. I had a neighbor that had a CWD positive (a few farms over), and were contacted by MDC. The additional "killing" was optional for the neighbor. I spoke with him directly. MDC only gets forceful when they get "hot zones", or where several deer in that specific neighborhood test...

    Regs Dialogue with MDC Director

The main question I'd like to see Jason address is.. IMO, it appears MDC is using CWD as a trojan horse to keep deer numbers down. I believe the special interest groups are encouraging and pushing the CWD fear mongering agenda as a way to reduce our populations. Have a positive in your area...

    Regs Dialogue with MDC Director

FWIW, I asked a few follow up questions to Joe's original email, namely if the survey results had changed over time of moving the rifle season outside the rut. There has been some improvement, but it does still appear we are in the vast minority (15% historically to now 20%). This does...

    Brassicas

I think you're misinterpreting my response to the earlier question. The question was asked "given the time of year". My response was based on the time of year, (going on Labor Day) for planting date for the specific mix list of seed he mentioned. It wasn't based on "blindly throwing out...

    Brassicas

I just had a pop up rain after planting Friday with no rain in the forecast.. I plant by calendar. I've never had any issues with that in 15+ years of farming and food plotting.

    Brassicas

Not everyone is able to jump and head to their farm 2 hours before a rain. Not knowing exactly where in Iowa the poster is from, calendar wise and given his mix, its a good time to plant. Packing everything in is a good way to press into the soil. Birds don't typically eat much brassica...

    Brassicas

Given your timing, I'd mix the brassicas with the rye and plant ASAP. If your plot was in the woods, I'd put down a heavy dose of lime and 200# of 6-24-24 as well.

    Switchgrass

I haven't had much luck frost seeding switch. Much better stands spring / early summer planting IMO.

Tell me why we should shoot more does

I was thinking he was wanting to stay at his new farm long term, or permanently since he was back closer to home? Otherwise, I agree. That valley makes access brutal. Everything watches you come and go..

Tell me why we should shoot more does

In my experience, and on our MO farms, its pretty simple: - More does = more bucks. - More bucks = more good bucks. When the population gets too high, shoot does. The buck population will eventually follow your doe control efforts though. If not, mother nature will correct if it goes too...

Tell me why we should shoot more does

With planting that much food, and the massive improvement of great habitat through his plantings, burns, etc. I think he knows the population will explode. He is also trying to buy a little time to let his plantings get established before a larger herd is "released" on them.. My thoughts...

    Clover

I don't see any clover. I would nuke the CSG with gly, disc or till the field, broadcast rye, cultipack, broadcast clover seed and cultipack again. Tiny seed likes a prepared seedbed.

Tell me why we should shoot more does

Since the "hunting industry" are a bunch of sellouts.. I wonder if any of them have been bought by special interest groups hellbent on reducing deer numbers? Nah.. That would never happen.

Reality of Land Buying 2000 vs Today

Did you adjust for inflation? IE - If equal to $29,000 today, it would mean land was undervalued in 2000, and higher today. 1981 falls somewhere in between..

    Milo

Patience grasshopper.. ;) You have some healthy looking milo plants in there. You should get some nice heads on those. FWIW, grasses don't seem to have the yield drag on milo like they do corn. Your mix is going to create some great fall, winter cover!
