Passed on this one tonight and an hour later got a text from the neighbor that he shot it. It happens all of the time. He was really happy with him though, so good for him.
My experience has been about the same as yours. There have been a few that I just watched when they were 120 inch deer that I got to see when they were in the130's, but the ones that I passed that were 140 or so hoping to see them at 160 have never come back.
One of these days it will work.
Why would you not shoot? It's not like there will ever be an established population in Iowa. I also like the fact that I can go to my treestand or turkey spot in the pitch black and not worry about getting stalked.
So since we got this first trail cam pic I have had two in person sightings in our county. One maybe two miles from where that camera was and one about 10miles away.
Crazy how a guy could not see any in the area ever and then in a matter of a few months have multiple sightings.
Anybody have any luck with the youngsters? We saw plenty of turkeys and the young guy I took out took a shot at a young doe, but it was a clean miss.
I think he still had a good time though.
Not panicking guys, just curious. I think it is pretty cool to catch one on camera. They are on my list. Might head south to try and get one this Fall. Not sure how the DNR decides when to open up a county for hunting.
Exactly what I am worried about too. We have had a decent turkey population with quite a few young ones the last few years. We will see what things look like the next few.
