    Tree Planting

I like the idea of chestnuts too and I had planned to plant them in my CRP - was informed that chestnuts were considered an "ornamental" and would not be an approved species to plant in CRP...Apparently our forestry folks think only in terms of lumber with respect to approved species...at least...

    LOVE THOSE APPLES

I hope the apple trees I planted this year become that kind of a draw in a few years!

    Cost of Spraying?

My initial reaction is that $40/acre sounds a bit high - unless as noted above it is for the small 1-2 acre plots. Generic roundup costs me just under $6/acre at the rate I spray. By the time you add fuel, time etc $14.80/acre sounds about right - for larger plots. I know I wouldn't haul my...

    CRP extensions

I just got notice that my CRP passed inspection for the 5 year extention. I'm sure it was "boiler plate" text but it did mention that trees would have to be removed for any future enrollments.

    2010+ Foodplot

Thanks for the input...I'll have to monitor this year and decide if I need to upgrade on the cages to a larger version! I'll definitely keep tabs on the tree shelters to watch for rodents nesting.

    2010+ Foodplot

Thanks for the input guys. DBL - I had seen your post on the tree tubes & mice girdling. I'll be sure to keep an eye on them. I also purchased vented tubes which the manufacturer Treepro.com claims significantly reduces rodent damage. I also thought I would try spraying the inside of the...

    2010+ Foodplot

Attached are a couple of pictures of the fruit trees I planted this spring to {hopefully} have a good food source in a few years. The plot consists of: - 25 fruit trees (mostly apple) - 6 Persimmon - 9 Paw-paw - 15 chestnut (more of an experiment than wildlife food source) They are all caged...

    Bruce's food plots planted

I'd love to get a tiller & a JD utility tractor (I work for Deere too but we don't get EE discounts on anything but the smallest consumer models : ( I plant about 5-6 acres of plots each year - how much is too much to tackle with a tiller vs larger pull behind equipment? How does the...

    Are we making progress?

I have a similar perspective as DBL - have not seen as many quality bucks after 7 years of attempting QDM. Noticed an upturn after a couple of years but recently (last 3 years) there has been a lot more poaching in the area (8 headless bucks found last year within 1.5 mile radius that I know...

    moving trees

I've never tried (nor heard of anyone else who has) moved fruit trees that are that big. If the trunks are bigger than about 4", I suspect they won't survive the move. I did tree spade several oaks into my yard that were in the 10'-12' range and they were set back quite a bit - in fact "whips"...

    A tip for protecting pines.

Re: another way to protect fruit trees: [ QUOTE ] what is the best way to 'wrap' fruit tree stems before caging them? [/ QUOTE ] I've used both the tree wrap you can purchase at any nursery, Walmart etc. or just flat white latex paint. Either have worked for me to keep the rodents from...

    New foodplot item

I've heard of it but haven't actually talked to anyone who has planted it.

    A tip for protecting pines.

Apple trees need to be caged to protect from deer and either painted or wrapped to protect from rodents. I lost a dozen trees a few years ago that were caged due to rodents girdling the trunks. You can used old woven wire fence to build cages.
