    Crazy Idea

I totally get your predicament...I have about 3 or 4 places on my farm that resemble what you have described. Yes, the deer will cross those deep ditches some, but like you have noticed, the main, natural movement is "upslope", where it is easy walking. I have toyed for years with the idea of...

SC iowa BUST! Theft, trespass & shed poaching…

Glad to see the bad guys get caught! A key phrase in all of that, to me, was..."The landowners conducted their own investigation...". Good for those guys!

Whose got a booth at the classic this weekend?

OMG...another blast from the past from my HS days. This one though, this one was a joke of a product, admittedly.

Whose got a booth at the classic this weekend?

Hmmm...I am not sure if I have one or not. It's possible that I do, in a box, in the garage, etc. I'll look. Mine would probably be a prototype, not the finished product. Perhaps that would make it even more collectible. Haha. :)

Whose got a booth at the classic this weekend?

Insider alert!! :) Former HS guy here. This ALSO WORKED! For real!! And yes, I had one of the early prototypes to test one fall. Called in deer AND squirrels. :)

Whose got a booth at the classic this weekend?

Hey now...that thing really does work!! Little known fact...I worked for Hunter's Specialties when this life altering device was brought to the market. I actually sat in a meeting with the creator(s) of the Butt-Out as they pitched their product to the owners of the company at that time...

OFFENSE!! 2 Bills to support!! SF 293 & SF 247 EMAIL IN!!! What a great change!!!!

Very much agree. ^^ The only people happy about the deer populations then were...deer hunters! I am more in the neutral territory here on what should be done, but there is no way on earth that we will ever see the very high overall deer populations that we had in the early 2000's, no way...

    Switchgrass

In Southern Iowa, the "safe" date for switchgrass germination was told to me to be May 10th. Early, or late, Springtime conditions could influence that date. But I always found it to be "right in there" in terms of accuracy/validity.

    Thermal Drones for deer surveys

Just a FYI...this practice goes back 15 to 20+ years ago, or so. I remember there being public outcry about it way back in the day, but then I really haven't heard much about White Buffalo for several years. I truly would not be surprised if you counted all of the years that IC has brought...

    Thermal Drones for deer surveys

Welcome to Iowa City, for real, they do, and at least some of the years that they have done this have been VERY expensive. No amount of logic/common sense told to the IC Council seems to get through. They are paying THOUSANDS of dollars that someone do for free.

    Thermal Drones for deer surveys

Why would they feel the need to fly at night? As I understand it, these things do not spook bedded deer. If so, fly them during the day...on straight time, not on OT and/or DT at night. Hey...do you think White Buffalo knows this and is proposing the most costly "solution" to the numpties on...

Tis the season for shed poaching!

FWIW, somewhat related...I listened to the recent Don Higgins podcast today and he made reference that he had been in Iowa last week on some primo properties is S. Iowa and over the course of the days that they were out on the land they found ZERO sheds. Don found this very odd, but the...

Tis the season for shed poaching!

To me, the "casual" trespasser that I was attempting to describe is older, 50+, and lives close to the land in question. They tend to remember the good old days, back when everyone kinda traipsed all over the place looking for mushrooms, hunting, etc. They remember who used to own that...

    Off the wall idea

I am intrigued, but a little wary too. Peach trees that I have had experience with tend to be fragile and prone to splitting and so forth. Do the deer eat the fruit? I know that possums and coons will, since I used to have some peaches in my yard.

Tis the season for shed poaching!

That totally stinks and I am glad you were able to solve it and catch the perpetrator/neighbor. But one thing I have learned over the years is that not all neighbors hold the same opinions about trespassing, dogs(pets) on the loose, etc. I am not saying that they are right, but their opinions...

OFFENSE!! 2 Bills to support!! SF 293 & SF 247 EMAIL IN!!! What a great change!!!!

This. ^^ Just confirming what others are also sharing... We shoot 8 to 12'ish deer per year off of our place, usually 1 or 2 bucks and the rest does. Let's call 8 or 9 an average year, with say 2 bucks. In Aug. '23 we began noticing what turned out to be a significant EHD die off. Between...

My first house was more than $30K, FWIW, but I also made a fraction of the money then than I do now. See how that works? While in college I worked much more than PT hours, I worked mostly FT hours because I had to so I could afford to stay in, etc. Then, once out of college I worked every...

Respectfully...you need to slow your roll sir. You are hurling semi-veiled insults towards a range of people here and yet you cannot identify ONE solid example of someone here on IW doing what you are so riled up about. In one post, above, you paint with a pretty wide brush...in another post...

    Hounds

Total FWIW...just watched three hounds jog through my yard at the farm on security camera video. Watched them for a minute or two until a truck pulled up at the end of the lane and loaded them up. Apparently no coyotes located.

    Little runt

Ha...the other day I received some security camera footage from some deer walking through our yard at the farm and the third deer was TINY. I was a little surprised that it had made this far. It seemed healthy, but it had to have been very late born.
